Diamond Jubilee Medals for McGill Law Community

More than a dozen members of the McGill Faculty of Law community have received Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals this year.

The award, which was created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne, recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to Canadian society. In total, 60,000 Canadian medals were awarded in ceremonies occurring throughout the year.

New books and online database launched by the Crépeau Centre

On April 3, 2013, the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law launched three  new books and  a new resource website.

During a well-attended reception held in the Common Room, Professor Yaëll Emerich, interim director of the Centre, presented the books and a new database, and took the opportunity to warmly thank the many writers, editors, supporters and colleagues who participated in their preparation.

Law student Marvin Coleby elected president of the Black Law Students Association of Canada

The Faculty was happy to learn that Marvin H. Coleby, VP external of the Black Law Students Association of McGill (BLSAM), has been elected President of the Black Law Students Association of Canada (BLSAC) for the 2013-2014 Term.

Marvin Coleby campaigned on a platform of youth empowerment, the refocusing of cultural and racial rights, closer Canada-US ties, and the implications of common and civil jurisdiction mixing for Black jurists.

Fabien Gélinas and Frédéric Bachand named first Norton Rose Faculty Scholars in Arbitration & Commercial Law

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professors Frédéric Bachand and Fabien Gélinas have been appointed Norton Rose Faculty Scholars in Arbitration and Commercial Law, for a two year term.

As holders of these Faculty Scholarships, Gélinas and Bachand, who are both active members of McGill's Private Justice and the Rule of Law research team, will be able to support a rich program of activities in international arbitration and commercial law. 

Six McGill Law Students to Clerk at Supreme Court of Canada in 2014

Six students of McGill's Faculty of Law will serve as law clerks to justices of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014. They are Marc-André Roy (Justice Cromwell), Nicola Langille (Justice Fish’s successor), , Zain Naqi (Justice Moldaver), Molly Krishtalka (Justice Karakatsanis), Ian Dahlman (Justice LeBel’s successor), and Marcus Moore (Chief Justice McLachlin) [not in photo].

Daniel Jutras appointed amicus curiæ by the Supreme Court of Canada

Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Wainwright Chair in Civil Law, has been appointed by the Supreme Court of Canada to serve as amicus curiæ in the Reference on the Reform of the Senate of Canada that was brought to the Court by the Governor in Council.

Ronald B. Sklar (1935-2013)

It is with great sadness that we must announce the death of Professor Ronald B. Sklar (1935-2013), who passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on March 29, 2013 after a short illness.

Associate Professor Ron Sklar taught and researched in the fields of criminal law, evidence, law and psychiatry and ethical issues in psychiatry at the Faculty of Law of McGill University for over 35 years.

Two McGill Law students receive Scarlet Key Award

The Faculty of Law was delighted to hear that two of its students were awarded Scarlet Key Awards during a pining ceremony held at McGill’s Faculty Club on March 22, 2013.

Graham Splawski and Sandra Aigbinode both received their Scarlet Key pins from Principal Heather Munroe-Blum, in recognition of their efforts to help support McGill and the broader community.

Yaëll Emerich named acting director of the Crépeau Centre

Professor Daniel Jutras, Dean of the Faculty of Law, has announced that Professor Yaëll Emerich has been named by the Provost of McGill University as Acting Director of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law, from 1 January 2013 to 30 June 2013.

Roderick Alexander Macdonald, O.C.

McGill University Law Professor Roderick A. Macdonald has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours.

On December 30, Professor Macdonald, the F.R. Scott Professor of Constitutional and Public Law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law, was one of 33 Officers, two Companions and 56 new Members welcomed to the Order of Canada.

Future Royal Society of Canada library to be named after Professor Rod Macdonald

On November 16, 2012 at an event at the Ottawa Convention Centre to mark the 130th anniversary of Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Governor General David Johnston announced the creation of a new library at Walter House, the RSC’s new headquarters in Ottawa. “I am equally delighted to announce that this new reading room, with the support and encouragement of his many friends, colleagues and loved ones, is to be named in honour of Rod Macdonald,” he added.

H. Patrick Glenn Named President of the American Society of Comparative Law

Professor H. Patrick Glenn was elected President of the American Society of Comparative Law, during the ASCL’s annual conference October 4 to 6, 2012.

The following day, when asked when he would begin his term, Glenn chuckled, “It’s started already! I spent the morning on practical business for the Association. We need to find an editor for the Journal, to start with.”

Nicholas Kasirer receives honorary doctorate from Université de Sherbrooke

During its graduation ceremony held on September 22, 2012, the Université de Sherbrooke granted an honorary doctoral degree to the Hon. Nicholas Kasirer, BCL’85, LLB’85, former Professor (1989-2009) and Dean (2003-2009) of the Faculty of Law of McGill University and now a Justice of Quebec’s Court of Appeal.
