Moving on from the labour disruption

On 20 June 2024, members of the Association of McGill Professors of Law (AMPL) suspended the strike they launched on 24 April. While they resume their academic and administrative activities, we thank students and colleagues for their continued patience.

Frequently Asked Questions

For BCL/JD students

When will grades be released for the winter 2024 term?

  • A closed session of Faculty Council will approve the grades from winter 2024 on 6 August 2024. They will be available on Minerva shortly afterwards.

  • In the meantime, transcripts show a blank or “NR” (No Record) as a placeholder for grades for the 2024 winter term. A “K” preceding the “NR” signals that an instructor not on strike entered a proposed final grade, not yet approved by Faculty Council, in Minerva. These codes do not affect the cumulative grade-point average, nor do they indicate that any work remains outstanding. When will renewable and in-course scholarships be allocated?

  • These decisions cannot be made until approval of grades from winter 2024 on 6 August 2024. We understand that these decisions are consequential to those whom they affect and will try to make them promptly. Some delay after approval of the marks is foreseeable.

  • Should a delayed renewal of your scholarship put you in a position of financial hardship, please contact doyen.droit [at] mcgill.ca

When can I register for a term essay for fall 2024 or winter 2025?

  • Registration for term essays will resume shortly. The Students Affairs Office will send an email to notify you when registration opens.

What is the impact of outstanding grades on firm recruitment processes?

  • The Faculty of Law is in touch with the main employers in our major markets to minimize the impact on students participating in the summer 2024 recruitment processes. These employers were notified that there would be delays in the grading of assignments and evaluations from the winter term. In addition, click here for a letter from the dean explaining the absence of grades from winter 2024 (click here for the French version).

How was eligibility to graduate determined for those who received their diplomas this spring?

  • The Dean and Associate Deans of the Faculty of Law reviewed the work of graduating students to determine whether it was of sufficient quality to meet the requirements of their program.

  • Diplomas were conferred on students eligible to graduate on 29 May.

  • Temporarily, transcripts include either a blank or “NR” (No Record) for Winter 2024 term grades. This code does not affect the cumulative grade-point average, nor does it indicate that any work remains outstanding. Once Faculty Council has approved final grades as per Faculty Regulations, those will be added to transcripts. Click here for a letter from the dean explaining the absence of grades from winter 2024.

Are the degrees granted this spring valid?

  • Yes. All diplomas presented on 29 May were approved by the McGill Senate, which is the final authority on degree conferrals.

Can graduates from May 2024 register for upcoming professional licensing examinations while winter 2024 grades are pending?

  • Yes. The Faculty of Law has been in touch with licensing bodies and received assurances to this effect.

  • Please use this form to let us know with which law society or licensing body you intend to register. With the information you so share with us, we will be able to provide tailored updates about requirements and deadlines, as well as generate any attestation letters necessary.

  • Those with specific needs are invited to contact doyen.droit [at] mcgill.ca for additional support.

Has the deadline for submitting LLM thesis and non-thesis projects changed?

  • No, the deadline remains 15 August 2024.

  • As a reflection of the interruption in supervision during the strike, the Office of Graduate Programs will be receptive to reasonable requests for an extension of up to one month. This will not trigger any additional fees.  For LLM Thesis students who are submitting their initial theses for evaluation, they will still pay the usual Thesis Evaluation fees as long as they have completed their three full-time terms of residency.

What is the revised timeline for DCL students preparing for their comprehensive exam?

  • DCL students and their supervisors should meet to discuss the initial drafts of the proposal and literature review by 26 July 2024.

  • Revised versions of these documents may be submitted by the usual date of 15 August 2024. But they may, instead, be submitted by 15 September 2024. Where the student elects to submit by this later date, subsequent deadlines will be adjusted accordingly.

What is the revised timeline for DCL students’ annual tracking meetings?

  • DCL students should contact their committee members by 10 August to schedule their tracking meeting to take place by 30 September 2024.
