The Macdonald Campus Office for Experiential Learning and Community Outreach facilitates unique, hands-on opportunities for students to apply and gain new skills beyond their regular coursework.

Undergraduate internships

Gain experience outside of the classroom through the Alton and Dianne McEwen and Family Internship Program, open to all undergraduate students in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Our office offers guidance on which internships to pursue, help with applications, and funding for the related costs.

Student experience enhancement

Get financial support for extra-curricular learning through a wide range of opportunities from academic conferences and independent projects to volunteering and field work!

Open to all Mac graduate, undergraduate, and FMT students, the Student Experience Enhancement Fund (SEEF) helps build knowledge and skills to complement the classroom experience.

Undergraduate research

The Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences offers all undergraduate students the opportunity to expand their learning experience by participating in research.

Undergrads involved in research projects may be paid through an Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) or receive academic credit through a research practicum.

McGill Panama Field Study Semester (PFSS)

Immerse yourself in the rich Panamanian culture and environment. All McGill students are eligible to apply for this interdisciplinary, community-engaged experiential learning opportunity.

Sustainable Agriculture Field Course in Guatemala (AGRI 325)

Explore food production and land management in different climatic regions of Guatemala. Go off the tourist path for a unique glimpse of the country's rural realities through a sustainability lens.

Barbados Interdisciplinary Tropical Studies (BITS)

Engage in an activity-filled, hands-on study experience with a Caribbean flavour. Get exposed to a wide range of agri-food-energy industries and related socio-economic issues in Barbados.

Advanced lab/design courses

Some programs in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences offer courses with opportunities for experiential learning through projects or labs in which students design their own product or solution.

Bioresource Engineering

In their capstone design courses, Bioresource Engineering students apply design methods, principles, and practices to an open-ended design project. This project typically involves design project development from initial concept to a final working prototype.

Food Science

Food Science students have the opportunity to take a product development course, learning how to develop new products or improve existing ones. Past students have even won international competitions with their products!

Professional Agrology

Students taking the Professional Agrology specialization will apply agronomic knowledge to address a current issue in the agri-food sector, under the supervision of a faculty member.

Professional practicums

Some programs in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences include a practicum. Practicums involve work experience under the supervision of an experience registered or licensed professional.

Dietetics

Nutrition students majoring in Dietetics complete 40 weeks of practicum (also known as a stage). These weeks are sequenced throughout the program, starting in the first year.

Food Science & Nutritional Sciences

Students completing concurrent Bachelor's degrees in Food Science & Nutritional Sciences must also participate in two 12-week stages as part of their program.

Professional Agrology

Students taking the Professional Agrology specialization complete an internship course ( AGRI 410 - Agrology Internship ) over the summer and following fall terms. Watch videos made by past students about their experiences.
