There are various opportunities for learning/teaching in retirement offered by McGill and other institutions in Montreal.
The McGill Community for Lifelong Learning (MCLL), formerly known as the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement (MILR), provides a large number of study sessions on a variety of subjects. McGill retirees are always welcome to join MCLL as participants or moderators. MCLL is based on the idea of peer learning, and teaching and study group moderators are volunteer members of MCLL. The role of the moderator is to organize the study topic in a way that encourages the active involvement of all participants. McGill retirees who might be interested in being involved with MCLL but may not yet feel ready to act as a moderator are encouraged to register for one or two study sessions that they would find of interest.
Concordia University has a program in which retired individuals are allowed to audit any undergraduate course for a greatly reduced fee. It also offers adult learning programs through its Centre for Continuing Education.
There are also courses offered through the Belles soirées program of l'Université de Montréal, as well as the Thomas Moore Institute, the Goethe Institute, the Visual Arts Centre, Dawson College and other organizations.
There are also many opportunities for taking courses overseas, in a combination of travel and learning. Prominent among these are the Oxford Berkeley Seminars and Smithsonian Journeys.
