Size Exclusion Chromatography is a widely used techniques for detection of average molecular weights and their distribution of a polymer sample.
A small volume of a diluted polymer solution in an appropriate solvent (mobile phase or eluent) is passed through a column packed with porous “gel” beads (stationary phase). Separation occurs through the partitioning of polymer molecules into the pore structure of the beads due to chain hydrodynamic volume differences with large molecules eluting first. A graph is generated based on elution (or retention time) versus the signal from a specific detector. Using standards of determined MW and narrow distribution, a column calibration curve is constructed that correlates mathematically standards MW with their retention time the retention time of the analyzed sample is then used to detect its average molecular weights and distribution.

This modular SEC system is equipped with a temperature control autosampler with pretreatment capability (CBM-20A), a Refractive Index Detector (RID-20A) (range: 1 to 1.75 RIU, 30-60°C), Diode Array Detector (SPD-M20A) (wavelength range of 190-800 nm) and a Sedex Evaporative Light Scattering Detector with laser-based source (90 degree scattering angle). Two ovens allow separation at lower (from 10°C bellow room temperature to 85°C) or higher (up to 150°C) temperatures.
Column calibration available with PS and PMMA standards only.
Choice of column and eluent must be discussed with staff beforehand.
