Career Planning Advice

Post-Interview Reflection

Because you will be doing a number of interviews and because submission of Rank Order Lists does not take place until several weeks (or even several months) after your last interview, it is advisable to take a structured, systematic approach to document each interview experience. There are two concrete ways we recommend doing this:

  1. After each interview, write a brief, one-paragraph narrative of your overall impression of the program. It should address things that really impressed you and things that did not sit well with you.

  2. Use a standardized program comparison tool that allows you to identify your personal program preferences and then compare the programs at which you interviewed on those factors that are most important to you:

Such as logging in to Careers in Medicine and in the Getting into Residency dropdown menu under the “Tools” heading, select and complete the Residency Preference Exercise.
