Guidelines for Research Centres

All Research Centres within the Faculty of Medicine (including those not receiving financial support from the Faculty) must submit an annual report to the Office of the Associate Dean (Research) for review by the Faculty’s Committee for Oversight of Research Units (CORU).  CORU will review all Centres, develop a priority ranking, and provide brief summary comments to the Centre’s Director.

Centres based in the Faculty of Medicine (i.e., those whose Directors are members of the Faculty, whose external funding [if any] is administered within the Faculty, and whose primary membership includes a large proportion of members of the Faculty) may be considered for financial support.  Centres that require internal funding will be granted a minimum base budget of $15,000/yr each (up to the maximum available budget envelope) for a period of one to three years if CORU review has deemed them meritorious.  Those considered to be of highest priority* may be eligible for an additional allocation on a competitive basis up to a maximum of $50,000/yr (again dependent on the available budget envelope).  Please note that there may be high priority Centres that have sufficient funds from other sources such that they are not financially supported by this mechanism within the Faculty.

For those Centres applying for external funding (new or renewal), a commitment of support for the period of external funding will be provided, but annual review will continue to be mandatory for input on performance.

For new Centres and those with Provisional status, a base budget allocation ($15,000/yr) may be provided to support start-up (budgets permitting).   No long-term funding commitment will be provided; annual review will be mandatory and continued financial support will be dependent on CORU’s review and availability of funds.

For those Centres not based in the Faculty of Medicine, but with a substantial number of members from the Faculty, financial support from the Faculty may be considered should budgets allow.  A maximum of $7500/yr may be allocated, provided that other implicated Faculties or Institutions are also committing cash contributions.

In all cases, if Faculty support is awarded, agency guidelines (for those with external support) for eligible expenses apply to institutional matching funds, with the following exceptions:

  • Institutional funding cannot be transferred outside of McGill at any time during the project
  • Salary for the PI or co-applicants is not eligible even if faculty salary is eligible through the external funding agency
  • Institutional funding cannot be used to buy teaching release
  • Funds should not be used as primary support for graduate student funding

*Priority will be determined based on CORU’s established review criteria, including standard performance indicators (joint funding, joint publications, training environment) and fit with the Faculty’s Strategic Research Plan.
