Roshni Alam, BSc
Roshni was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. Her ever present inquisitiveness and research questions have led her to extensive experience over the years, including: wet lab research at the Goodman Cancer Research Centre, clinical research at both the Shriner’s Hospital & Marie-Enfant Children’s Rehabilitation Centre, as well as qualitative research with the department of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre.
She also spent two years working as a hospital ward coordinator at the Royal Victoria Hospital, which served to cultivate her strong affinity to value-based patient-centered care and patient-centered outcomes research
She obtained a B.Sc. degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology from McGill University and is currently pursuing her master’s degree under the supervision of Dr. Julio F. Fiore Jr. and Dr. Liane S. Feldman.
She was working on the development of a patient-centered outcome measure to assess recovery after abdominal surgery. Furthermore, she will be graduating from McGill University’s medical program; class of 2023.
With regards to future plans, Roshni aims to continue actively pursuing her interests in the amelioration of patient-centered care, the optimization of clinician-patient communication, as well as the promotion of patient empowerment & self-management.

Mohammed Al Abri, MD, FRCSC FACS
MIS fellow. Graduated from the medical school Sultan Qaboos University in Oman in 2007. Completed the general surgery residency program in 2017. Completed the bariatric surgery fellowship in 2017-2019. Received the best fellow teaching award in 2019. Moved back after fellowship to Oman as the first well trained advanced MIS surgeon.

Negar Karimian, MD, MSc
Negar graduated with an MD degree from Ahvaz Jondishapour University of Medical Science, Iran in 2010.
She moved to Toronto right after graduation to pursue her Masters at the prestigious Institute of Medical Science at University of Toronto under Supervision of Dr. Mladen Vranic and Dr. Herbet Gaisano. Her research during her MSc training was focused on Somatosatin Receptor Type 2 (SSRT2a) antagonism and its role in improving Glucagon counterregulation to hypoglycemia in Type 1 Diabetes.
She joined MIS team as a PhD student within the department of Experimental Surgery under supervision of Dr. Liane Feldman and Dr. Franco Carli. The focus of her PhD training was on post-operative insulin resistance and protein catabolism as well as the interventions to improve the post-operative glucose and protein economy.

Amin Madani, MD
Amin Madani is a general surgery resident at McGill University. He is currently finishing a Master of Science in Experimental Surgery and Surgical Innovation.
Amin’s thesis involves the development and validation of a novel simulation-based curriculum to teach surgeons and surgical trainees the principles and adverse-events related to the use of electrosurgery, in the hope to promote safety in the operating room.
Amin is also part of the new Surgical Innovation program at McGill University, bringing together the expertise of surgeons, engineers and entrepreneurs to develop novel devices and innovative solutions that will improve clinical outcomes for patients. He is currently involved in the development, validation and implementation of several novel medical devices.
Amin has received several operating grants and awards for his work, including the CAGS Ethicon© Research Award, CIHR Banting and Best Canada Graduate Scholarship, Fond de Recherche du Québec – Santé Research Grant, SAGES Research Grant, SSAT Residents & Fellows Research Conference Award Winner for best plenary oral presentation, amongst others. Highly committed to surgical education, he helps organize the weekly Surgical Foundations seminars for junior surgical trainees and is involved in the development of various educational modules. He has also co-authored and co-edited the Manual Of General Thoracic Surgery, a pocket manual for medical students and residents.

Yusuke Watanabe, MD
Yusuke Watanabe was born in Tokyo, Japan. He received his M.D. degree in 2004. He was a resident of Osaka University Hospital and affiliated teaching hospitals and a fellow of Hokkaido University Hospital with affiliated teaching hospitals. From April 2011 to May 2012, he was a surgeon in Hokkaido University Hospital.
Since June 2012, Dr. Watanabe was a research fellow in the Steinberg-Bernstein Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Montreal General Hospital. The current project of Dr. Watanabe was to develop a comprehensive training for advanced laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery.

Madoka Takao, MD
Madoka Takao was born in Kyoto, Japan. She received her M.D degree in 2002. She was a resident of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and a fellow of affiliated teaching hospitals and Shizuoka Cancer Center. Since April 2014, she is a PhD candidate of Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine.
From October 2015 till October 2017, Dr. Takao was a visiting scholar in the Steinberg-Bernstein Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Montreal General Hospital.

Toshitatsu Takao, MD
Toshitatsu Takao graduated from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in 2002. He learned endoscopic diagnosis and advanced therapeutic skills for early gastrointestinal cancer in Shizuoka Cancer Center in Japan and had lots of experience as a clinical fellow. His specialty is colorectal Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection.

Satoshi Endo, MD
Satoshi was born in Chiba, Japan. He received his M.D. degree in 2004.
He began his surgical residency training at Kameda Medical Center. He was a fellow of Chiba University with affiliated teaching hospitals. From April 2015 to April 2016, he was an assistant professor in Teikyo University Chiba Medical Center.
From May 2016 till May 2018, Satoshi was a research fellow in the Steinberg-Bernstein Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Montreal General Hospital.

Juan Mata, MD
Juan was born in Mexico City, Mexico. Graduated with an M.D. from the Autonomic University of Morelos in Mexico, he moved to Canada in 2010.
Juan graduated from the McGill University with MD in Experimental Surgery under the supervision of Dr. Liane Feldman and Dr. Julio Fiore. The focus of his MSc was on the implementation of technological aids to improve the adherence and outcomes of enhanced recovery programs in colorectal surgery.

Ioana Antonescu, MD
Ioana entered medical school in 2006, after graduating from the Health Science program at Marianopolis College and obtaining the Birks Bronze Medal for placing overall second in the Sciences program. She then completed one year in the Medicine Preparatory program and four years of medical school at McGill, receiving in 2010 the Wood Gold Medal for the most outstanding clinical performance in the two-year clerkship period.
Following this, Dr. Antonescu decided to pursue a training in General Surgery at McGill, driven by a particular interest for Vascular Surgery as well as for minimally invasive techniques in the field. A longstanding mathematical inclination and a fascination for the multi-dimensionality and complexity of managing surgical patients have motivated her to pursue a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology via the Intensive MSC-T program. She successfully completed a Master's Degree in Epidemiology (July 2012 - December 2013).
Having been offered funding from CIHR, FRSQ, and the Surgical Scientist program, Dr. Antonescu worked under the supervision of Dr. Liane Feldman on research focusing on patient-reported outcomes primarily after digestive surgery hoping to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to translate original ideas into useful clinical studies with the potential to directly impact patient care.

Ghada Enani, MD
Ghada Enani is a demonstrator at the department of General Surgery at King Abdulaziz University hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where she received her MBBS in 2012. She then pursued her Masters degree in Educational Psychology at McGill in 2013-2014.
Currently, Ghada is a general surgery resident at the University of Manitoba. Her current research project is on the development of advanced laparoscopic suturing skills curriculum under the supervision of Dr. Melina Vassiliou.

Amani Munshi, MD
Amani was born in Mumbai, India and moved to Toronto at a young age. After getting her Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from the University of Toronto, she attended medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She then completed a general surgery residency in 2013 from SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, New York. She has also completed a Bariatric Surgery fellowship at the Centre for the Advancement of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Edmonton, Alberta and the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship with the department at McGill. Her interests include minimally invasive foregut surgery, bariatric surgery, and surgical education and training.

Chao Li, MD

Tanya Castelino, MD
Tanya Castelino was born and raised in Montreal. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy & Cell Biology from McGill University in 2007. She subsequently attended medical school at McGill and graduated with the MD CM degree in 2012. She is currently a General Surgery resident at the McGill University Health Centre.
She is also currently enrolled in a Master’s program in the department of Experimental Surgery, under the supervision of Dr. Liane Feldman. Her research interests include postoperative outcomes and enhanced recovery programs with a specific interest in early mobilization after surgery and patient-reported outcomes.

Nicoló Pecorelli, MD
Dr. Nicoló Pecorelli was born in Brescia, Italy. He’s a senior resident in general surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.
He was enrolled in the Master's of Experimental Surgery program at McGill under the supervision of Dr. Liane Feldman, focusing on the outcomes of the enhanced recovery pathway in colorectal surgery.

Andrea Petrucci, MD,MEd
Andrea was born and raised in Montreal and grew up in a little Italian community in the east end of the island. She was a competitive figure skater on the international circuit in ice dancing and synchronized skating and retired from my passion to pursue a career in medicine.
After completing a Health Science degree at Vanier College in the sports- study program, Andrea entered the pre-medical program at McGill University and then went on to graduate from the Faculty of Medicine. With a fond interest in surgery, she decided to pursue a career in General Surgery and was accepted in the General Surgery program at McGill University. She was fortunate to have the opportunity to take time away from her clinical duties to complete a research leave. With the generous support form the Surgeon Scientist Program within the department of General Surgery, Andrea completed a Masters degree in Educational Psychology with an interest in computer based learning for residency training. Dr. Petrucci also served as VP Academic on the McGill General Surgery Residency Committee organizing educational events for the resident body.

Amy Anne Neville, MD, FRCSC
Originally from Quebec City, Dr. Neville graduated from McGill medical school in 2005. She subsequently completed her residency in General Surgery at McGill University where she participated in the Surgeon Scientist Program. Following residency she completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at McGill and then pursued a second fellowship in Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Neville completed a Masters degree in Epidemiology focusing on the development of classification systems for post-operative complications. She planned to pursue a career in academic surgery with a focus on minimally invasive foregut surgery and bariatric surgery.
Research interests: surgical outcomes, measures of recovery and the use of physical activity as a measure of recovery as well as bariatric surgery.

Yo Kurashima, MD, PhD
Dr. Kurashima is Assistant professor of Surgery in the Hokkaido University (Sapporo, Japan).
In 2012 Dr. Kurashima has been selected one of two 2012 international surgical education scholars of ACS. He is the president of the 1st Surgical Education Summit in Japan that will take place in July, 2014.

Genevieve Chartrand, MD
Geneviève graduated from McGill University cum laude in 2011 with a Bachelors of Science in Physiology.
She worked with the Minimally Invasive Surgery research team at the Montreal General Hospital, where she became familiar with the FLS simulator. Under the guidance of Dr. Vassilou, Geneviève published an article: "The Effect of Acute Aerobic Exercise on the Acquisition and Retention of Laparoscopic Skills." This project received a SAGES grant. Geneviève graduated from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City in 2016 and completed her general surgery residency at the University of Montreal.
