Oral health of humanitarian migrants: Canada as a case study

Image showing first slide of powerpoint presentationIn this workshop, the MOHP members oriented healthcare providers, refugees, researchers and other professionals interested in refugee health on the global oral health situation of this population with a focus on MOHP’s work in Canada. Dr Manav Saini discussed the oral health experiences of refugee children in Montreal and their parents’ perspectives on access to care. Dr Nazik Nurelhuda Suleiman updated the audience on the team’s advanced understanding of the dental care pathways of humanitarian migrants in Ontario, Canada. Dr Fatima Keshani presented her master proposal on advancing a program theory for community-level oral health promotion programs for humanitarian migrants using a realist review methodology. This work builds upon the work of Dr Negin Eslami Amirabadi. The workshop was moderated by Dr Mary Ellen Macdonald.

Dr Nazik Suleiman presented the sequential mixed methods protocol designed to investigate the oral health status of newly arrived humanitarian migrants in Quebec and Ontario, and their barriers to oral health care access at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry Research Day in February, 2020. This talk was awarded 'Best Presentation' in the category for post-doctoral fellows.

Dr Mark Keboa presented the protocol for the ‘Oral Health of Newly Arrived Humanitarian Immigrants in Quebec and Ontario’ study. This oral presentation was part of a curated symposium on the challenges and solutions of oral health inequalities in immigrants. He also presented a poster entitled ‘Service Providers and Dental Care of Humanitarian Migrants in Canada’.

Dr Mark Keboa gave a talk on the oral health care of refugees and asylum seekers in Canada, and moderated a brainstorming session on the potential opportunities for improving access to dental care and oral health of this population.
