Over 30 MURA and MAUT-RS members were treated to a very illuminating talk by Professor Chris Ragan who is the inaugural director of the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill on the topic of Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission, and its effort to reduce GHG emissions through the introduction of measures such as a carbon tax and cap & trade.

At MURA’s first Pension Investment Round-Table, held in the Gold Room of the Faculty Club, five speakers presented their chosen investment strategy. An open discussion followed between the speakers and the thirty members present ranging from investing either with a small or large firm, selecting the right annuity, opting for the McGill Group Life Income Fund (LIF), being a hands-on investor, to having a hedge against market risk. A most informative afternoon for all.

Fifteen members were treated to a private tour of the exquisite Château Ramezay and its gardens by Joan Barrett and her colleague Carly Pepler who are volunteer guides. Throughout the exhibition, they viewed unique artefacts and learned about the daily lives of the people who inhabited the region. The tour included the Salle de Nantes, an opulent room noted for its magnificent mahogany panels. The Château Ramezay was built in the early 18th century as a prestigious residence and is now one of the few vestiges of New France open to the public. It was the first building in Quebec to be classified as an historic monument. After the tour, some members enjoyed a delicious luncheon accompanied by a soft jazz duo at the Jardin Nelson. Almost 100 members attended this year's AGM. The meeting was followed by a riveting talk by Professor Henry Mintzberg who presented his views on the current state of our health care system. This was followed by a reception where members had the opportunity to catch up with colleagues and make new acquaintances. View photos

Pointe-à-Callière Museum

Twenty members were entranced by a fascinating tour of the Queens of Egypt exhibit at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum in Old Montreal. The vivacious guide, Alexandre, entertained and informed with his with vast knowledge about these archeological finds dating back 3,500 years ago. Many of the attendees enjoyed a gourmet lunch at L'Arrivage Bistro that is located next to the museum that also provided a beautiful view of the Old Port area. View photos

Over 30 MURA and MAUT-RS members enjoyed a luncheon with their colleagues and the view of beautiful Lac St. Louis at Tadja Hall. Aftwards, Professor Elsa Vasseur gave fascinating talk: How to make sure cows age well? Perspective on the sustainable life of dairy cattle. She illustrated the many ways that improved living conditions for cows would increase their quality of life and milk production for dairy farmers. For the third consecutive year, MURA held its Campus Café & Concert in collaboration with the Schulich School of Music. This year’s event entitled Musical Chairs Chamber Music Festival: Concerts and Masterclasses, featured students invited from Australia's Queensland Conservatorium and Finland's Sibelius Academy (photo). Over 50 MURA and MAUT-RS members enjoyed a very informative lecture in the Faculty Club Billiards Room by Professor Allan Greer, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Colonial North America at McGill, about the relationships between settlers and the indigenous people of Montreal during the mid 17th century.

Before attending a moving concert featuring the talented McGill Baroque Orchestra at Redpath Hall, over 30 members enjoyed a lovely reception held on the 6th Floor of the Executive Institute of the Desautels Faculty of Management. The dean of music, Brenda Ravenscroft, spoke briefly, and Kelly Rice provided historical background to the work being presented. View Photos

MAUT-RS and MURA co-hosted a spring luncheon/lecture in the ballroom of the Faculty Club. Over twenty members gathered to hear James McGill Professor of Bioresource Engineering, Chandra Madramootoo, talk about the critical importance of water, its scarcity, and the need to improve irrigation to enhance food production on the world scale.

About 60 members attended the second AGM where they learned about MURA events and activities, and enjoyed a very informative presentation by Yves Beauchamp, the new Vice-Principal (Administration & Finance) on the proposals for the Royal Victorial Hospital. MURA members and friends gathered on May 10th at the Centre d'histoire de Montréal, Place d’Youville, for a guided walking tour of Old Montreal. The guide, Tyler Wood, B.A. History, McGill, gave a captivating presentation with many details about the history of Montreal and the daily life of Montrealers during the 18th and 19th centuries. Some members enjoyed a delicious lunch before the tour at the L'Arrivage restaurant at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum. View Photos

Over 40 MURA members gathered at the Schulich School of Music for the Café Campus & Concert event. Gili Loftus and Hank Knox played a remarkable four-handed harpsichord rendition of works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Everyone enjoyed getting together and having a particularly delicious luncheon, thanks to caterer, Emma Cerulli. From all accounts, the MURA Spring event was a big success! View Photos
