Balfour Mount (OC, OQ, MD, FRCS(C)) came to McGill to study surgery and urology after earning his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1963. In 1974 his career changed dramatically when he spent a sabbatical period at St. Christopher’s Hospice in London. Over the next 30 years, Mount became the leading figure in palliative care medicine in Canada and vastly influential in his field worldwide. He established the Division of Palliative Care at McGill and in 1994 was appointed the first Eric M. Flanders Professor of Palliative Care. Mount was named an officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 and the Ordre national du Québec in 1988.
