Work Permit Renewal

Trainees who are not Canadian citizens/permanent residents must have a work permit that is valid for the entire duration of their training. The McGill University PGME office will assist you if you need to renew your work permit. This would include getting you a new LMIA number and sending you the necessary documents and instructions.

If, for some reasons, you haven’t received any email from us regarding the work permit renewal - two months prior its expiry date, please do not hesitate to send an email to pgme-immigration.med [at] mcgill.ca

IMPORTANT: Implied status

If you submit your work permit renewal request before the expiry of your current work permit, after the current work permit expires, you will have implied status. Implied status allows you to keep your foreign worker status while between work permits.

If you do not receive your new work permit before the expiry of your current work permit, we may request a copy of the courier receipt to prove implied status. Without this proof, you will not be able to continue working until your new work permit is approved.

If you leave Canada while on implied status, you may lose your foreign worker status. Please contact  Immigration Canada if you wish to leave the country while on implied status: 1 888 242 2100.

If your visa includes authorization to re-enter Canada, make sure it is valid for the duration of your stay outside Canada. Your visa must still be valid when you return to Canada. If your visa expires, you must wait until you obtain a new work permit to renew your visa.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND US A COPY OF YOUR NEW WORK PERMIT WHEN YOU RECEIVE IT.
