Thank you for your interest in our graduate programs in Political Science. For a summary of our programs and requirements, click the Political Science program page. Please refer to our  Application Checklist Fall 2024 for detailed information about the application process. Please note that GRE tests are no longer required for the PhD application.

The deadlines for applications to the Department for September admission are January 15, 2024 for MA applications and December 15, 2023 for PhD applications. Applications received after these dates will not be considered. Very important: Do not apply to start the program in winter or summer – applications for winter or summer will be cancelled and the application fee will NOT be refunded.

♦ Applicants will only be able to submit supporting documents after they submit the application and pay the application fee. After the application fee is paid, applicants will be directed back to the portal, where supporting documents can be uploaded.

All applicants who are accepted into the program will be automatically considered for departmental financial assistance, including teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships. Such funding is limited, however, and we strongly encourage applicants to investigate external funding opportunities. Special Recruitment Fellowships

Indigenous Graduate Excellence Recruitment Fellowships from Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

In support of the 52 Calls to Actions for Truth and Reconciliation at McGill, the Department offers $10,000 annually of Graduate Excellence Funds to support Indigenous students in the PhD program. This award may be shared by a number of new and instream Indigenous students each year.

Guy Drummond Memorial Fellowship: Recipients are nominated by the Department of Political Science, with preference to graduating honours undergraduate students, on the basis of academic record, future contribution to Canadian life, and proficiency in French. Fellowships are tenable for study at Sciences Po in Paris. One year fellowships may also be offered as entrance awards to Masters or PhD students in political science intending to carry out graduate work related to France or the European Union, or for continuing students to support a year in France or a period of field work in France as part of the graduate program. The fellowship value varies, but would be likely to be in the range of $5,000 to $10,000 for an entrance fellowship, and up to $20,000 to support a Paris year.
