Advising Day 2018: Transitions
Advising Day 2018 took place on Wednesday, August 22 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Leacock 232.
The morning featured presentations on research, advising and student services initiatives related to student transitions, followed by a panel discussion on strategies for managing staff transitions from a range of units across campus.

Dr. Alice Cherestes & Dr. David Titley-Peloquin, Freshman Advisors The freshman program in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences uses a holistic, student centered approach to ensure and ease transition and adaptation to the expectations of university life. We will discuss some approaches we have used for this purpose, including strategies to promote student engagement, precalculus gateway testing and precalculus lab, freshman seminar, proactive midterm assessment, and peer tutoring. |

Naz Boke, MEd Surprising Findings on Student Stress and Coping University students experience large amounts of stress and often struggle to find healthy ways to cope. The Heath Research Team in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology has conducted extensive research in the area of mental health and well-being across various educational contexts. This presentation will outline some of the surprising findings on university student stress and coping based on this research with an emphasis how these results may be helpful within the field of student advising. |

It is time to find creative ways of infusing more in depth and meaningful connections and learning into our students work experiences.
