University Flag

The University Flag is flown on the McCall MacBain Arts Building. It features McGill iconic coat of arms elements and its three martlets, the University’s mascot, said to have no feet and so in perpetual flight, always soaring in pursuit of higher learning.

The Governor General's flag is flown when the Governor General of Canada is on campus as the Visitor of the University.

The University Flag is lowered to half-mast as a symbol of respect and mourning, to commemorate the life of a deceased member of the University community, including:

  • Any serving member of the University staff, whether academic or non-academic;
  • Any student currently registered at the University;
  • Current members of the Board of Governors;
  • Honorary doctorate recipients with close connections to McGill;
  • Emeritus professors, librarians and governors.

The Flag may also be lowered to commemorate the memory of an individual or event of significance to the University.

The Flag is usually lowered to coincide with a funeral or a memorial service. It is not normally lowered on Saturdays or Sundays or on public holidays. When lowered on a Friday, the Flag is raised at 2:30 p.m.

The decision to lower the University Flag rests with the Secretary-General. Any request to lower the flag should be made several days in advance, and directed to Mr. Thomas Daudlin, Governance Officer, Secretariat, by email at thomas.daudlin [at] mcgill.ca
