Shuaiqi Guo, Principal InvestigatorShuaiqi Guo (郭帅奇)

Principal Investigator

Shuaiqi Guo (Phil) is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Phil grew up in Shenyang, China. He obtained a B.Sc. in Biochemistry at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. He completed his Ph.D. thesis research with Dr. Peter Davies at Queen's University where he discovered his fascination with the structures of microbial cell-surface proteins. Since then, he has completed post-doctoral work with Prof. Ilja Voets at the TU/e and Prof. Jun Liu at Yale.

At McGill, Dr. Guo's laboratory studies microbe-host interactions that have significant impact on human health and climate change.

James Iarocci, graduate studentJames Iarocci

Graduate student

James grew up in Montreal, Quebec. He completed his B.Sc in the department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill. In the Guo Lab, James is using structural biology techniques such as cryo-electron tomography and cryo-EM single-particle analysis to elucidate the architectures of the Type IV Pilus Machine found in many pathogens and environmental bacteria. He hopes to gain valuable experience and become an expert of Cryo-EM. Outside the lab, James likes to travel and try new foods. He also enjoys playing piano.

Julie Anne Nadeau, graduate studentJulie Anne Nadeau

Graduate student

Julie grew up in Dieppe, New Brunswick. She obtained her B.Sc in Biochemistry at Mount Allison University. In the Guo lab, Julie is excited to learn about microbial interactions that have significant impact on human health and master valuable techniques including cryo-EM and cryo-ET. Outside of the lab, Julie enjoys running, exploring Montreal and cooking.

Ming Yu Wang, graduate studentMingyu Wang

Graduate student

Mingyu is from multiple places. He obtained his B.A. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Wesleyan University (Middletown, Conn.) where he completed an undergraduate thesis under Prof. Rich Olson. In the Guo Lab, Mingyu is excited to learn and apply cutting-edge cryo-EM techniques such as cryo-electron tomography with subtomogram averaging to investigate structures and functions of membrane-embedded protein nanomachineries. He hopes to pursue biomolecules critical to the betterment of human health and proteins that have the potential to impact climate change. Outside the lab, Mingyu is committed to learning the French language. Motivated by a sense of responsibility, Mingyu follows the topics of active climate policy, just economic development, and the social basis for sustainable pluralism.

Calin Daniel Codricel, Honours thesis studentCalin Daniel Codricel

Honours thesis student

Calin Daniel Codricel is a honours thesis student in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill. Originally from Craiova, Romania, Calin is investigating the structural and functional dynamics of microbial systems that play a crucial role in human health. He is particularly interested in the interplay between host-pathogen interactions and their implications for diseases. Calin aims to pursue a career in medicine, with a long-term goal of becoming a heart surgeon. Outside of his research, Calin enjoys working on cars, often found fixing and modifying his own vehicle.

Jamil Saim, Honours thesis studentJamil Saim

Honours thesis student

Jamil is a honours thesis student in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University. Born in Montreal with Algerian heritage, Jamil is investigating the structures and mechanisms of the Type IV Pilus Machines using advanced techniques such as cryogenic-electron tomography. With a passion for both research and discovery, Jamil aims to make meaningful contributions to the field of biomedical science. Outside the lab, Jamil is an avid soccer player and enjoys participating in various sports.

Grace Du, undergraduate studentGrace Du

Undergraduate student

Grace is from Calgary, Alberta. She is an undergraduate studying Physiology at McGill University. She is interested in learning how biological structures come together to form dynamic systems on a microscopic and macroscopic level. In the Guo lab, Grace aspires to develop a strong foundation in research and orient herself for a future career in science. Outside of the lab, Grace enjoys reading, exploring Montreal, and playing video games.

Haoxuan Yang, undergraduate studentHaoxuan Yang

Undergraduate student

Haoxuan is from Fuzhou, China. She is an undergraduate student majoring in anatomy and cell biology. She is doing a 396 research project in the Guo Lab to learn more about molecular and structural biology. Outside of the lab, she likes playing the guitar, swimming, and playing with her cat Ruarua.

Mollee Ye, undergraduate studentMollee Ye

Undergraduate student

Mollee is from New Hampshire, USA. She is an undergraduate student in the Bioengineering program at McGill University. She aims to learn more about structural biology alongside developing research and laboratory skills for a future career in biotechnology. Outside of the lab, Mollee enjoys reading, cooking, weightlifting, and folding origami.

Emma Liu Hao, research assistantEmma Liu Hao

Research Assistant

Emma is from Montreal, QC. She has completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at McGill University. Driven by her curiosity about the intersections between research and legal frameworks, she is working in the Guo lab to gain hands-on experience. She is set to undertake the final two years of her legal education at the Faculty of Law of Université de Montréal. Committed to leveraging her interdisciplinary background, Emma aspires to forge a career in law, where she intends to apply her unique blend of expertise to address complex legal challenges with insight and innovation. Outside of the lab, Emma enjoys hobbies such as Pilates, web design (such as designing this website), and travelling the world.
