Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, & Graduate Assistant positions

TA Positions

These Teaching Assistant positions are only available to McGill graduate students.

You must be a student registered at McGill in an MA or PhD degree program in the Fall 2024 term.

Hiring Unit: School of Information Studies

Position Summary:

  • Provide office hours for students
  • Assist in marking assignments and final examination
  • Assist in preparing class materials
  • Assist in class as needed; TA will have opportunity to teach a class during the term
  • Monitor online class discussions
  • Maintain course site on myCourses

Qualifications for INFS 601:

  • Ideally registered as a doctoral student at SIS
  • Graduate degree in information studies or related fields
  • Knowledge of library and information services

Qualifications for INFS 607:

  • Ideally registered as a doctoral student at SIS
  • Completed a degree in MLIS, MIS or related fields
  • Has taken 607 (Organization of Information) or an equivalent course (MLIS degree level)
  • Excellent knowledge of the principles of information representation, tools for information access, metadata, and controlled vocabularies
  • Knowledge of cataloging rules, LC subject headings, and DDC and LCC Classification Systems

Qualifications for INFS 617:

  • Ideally currently registered as a doctoral student at SIS
  • Completed a degree in MLIS, MIS, or related fields
  • Has taken Information Systems or an equivalent graduate course
  • Knowledge of information systems and programming concepts

Qualifications for INFS 619:

  • Ideally currently registered as a doctoral student at SIS
  • Completed a degree in MLIS, MIS, or related fields
  • Proficiency with online databases and information search systems preferred

Qualifications for INFS 680:

  • Strong knowledge of systems security
  • Relevant work or research experience in cybersecurity
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Passion to be a good teacher

INFS 680 Introduction to Information Security and Cryptography – Prof Ding – 90 hours

Hourly Salary: $35.20

Total Hours of Work per Term: 180 or 90

Position Start Date: 28 August 2024

Position End Date: 3 January 2025

RA & GA Positions

Several SIS faculty members employ students for Research Assistant (RA) positions. Positions are filled at the discretion of the professor. Masters and PhD students interested in RA opportunities should review research projects of interest on the SIS faculty pages and contact faculty members directly to express interest in working as an RA. Doctoral students should also mention interest to their supervisors. In addition, Graduate Assistant (GA) positions are occasionally recruited from the student body.
