Cybersecurity Courses as Electives in Master of Information Studies (MISt) Program

If you are enrolled in the MISt program, you are permitted to enroll in Cybersecurity courses as electives. There are certain conditions that must be met. Additionally, you must gain departmental approval before enrolling.

Course Sequence

INFS 629 and INFS 680 are prerequisites for all other cybersecurity courses.

• If you are in MISt 1, you must take INFS 629 in the Winter semester instead of INFS 680. The curriculum is similar, but INFS 629 is geared towards MISt students and will be a better learning experience.
• If you are MISt 2, you are permitted to take INFS 680 in the Fall semester if you did not take INFS 629 in your first year.

INFS 681, INFS 682, INFS 683 can be taken at any time after taking INFS 680/INFS 629 as long as you have satisfactory standing in the program.

INFS 684 is designed to be taken after the other courses; in certain circumstances, permission will be granted to take INFS 684 "out of sequence". This will require approval from the GPD.

Permission to Register

All INFS 68x courses require special permission to register. This must be done minimum 3-weeks prior to the start of the semester; add/drop period for the Cybersecurity courses are different than regular courses as they are condensed, 8-week courses. Please allow the department time for this process.

Steps for obtaining permission to register:

1. Discuss taking the Cybersecurity courses with your academic advisor.
2. Email your student number, a brief description of your IT experience, and the semester you intend to register for to studentaffairs.sis [at] mcgill.ca (subject: Permission%20to%20Register%20for%20INFS%2068x)
3. Once the department has issued approval, register for the course on Minerva.

Important Dates

Cybersecurity courses use a different schedule than regular term courses since they are 8-weeks long. It is the students responsibility to familiarize themselves with the corresponding add/drop and withdrawal deadlines if they enroll in these courses. Caveat

Taking a Cybersecurity course in the MISt program means it cannot be used as credit for another program. This means that if you take the INFS 68x courses in the MISt program and graduate, you will not be able to take the Cybersecurity Graduate Certificate later. If you take all 5 courses of the Cybersecurity program as a MISt student, you are not able to take the Cybersecurity Graduate Certificate nor will you obtain any indication of a Cybersecurity concentration on your diploma. However, the courses will be indicated on your transcript and you will be armed with excellent Cybersecurity knowledge.
