Scholarships, awards and assistance

McGill Scholarships and Awards

The majority of McGill scholarships or awards for both newly-admitted and returning students are processed and visible on the recipient’s fee account by the end of July. These awards reduce the student's outstanding balance.

Fall Term:

Students will be able to view Fall term scholarships or awards on Minerva once they have been processed by the Scholarships and Student Aid Office. These awards are post-dated and will be released (if a registration exists) to the student's fee account as of August 1 before Fall fees are due.

Winter Term:

Students will be able to view upcoming Winter term scholarships or awards on Minerva once they have been processed by the Scholarships and Student Aid Office. These awards are post-dated and will be released (if a registration exists) to the student's fee account in January, before Winter fees are due.

Please note that overpayments on scholarships or bursaries are refundable only after the official course add/drop period for each term. All inquiries concerning Scholarships should be directed to:

Email: scholarships [at] mcgill.ca

External Scholarships

Students may also receive external scholarships from organizations, outside agencies, parents’ employers or community groups. These awards are typically sent directly to the University. Such students are required to provide Student Accounts with a letter from the external body indicating how the scholarship funds should be distributed and any conditions of the award. If such information is not specified, the amount of the scholarship will be split into two installments. The first installment will be credited to the student’s account as soon as the student is registered, and the second installment will credited on the first working day in January. If the student does not meet the requirements of the scholarship the funds will be returned to the external body.

Students may need an anticipated scholarship to reduce the balance owing on their account. If this is the case, please send an email to student.accounts [at] mcgill.ca (Student Accounts), with “External Scholarships” in the subject line, at least one week before the fee deadline as stated on the e-bill. Please indicate the amount and currency (Canadian or US dollars) of the scholarship, and the agency or company issuing the scholarship in the email. A special fee deferral for the expected amount will be applied to the account and reduce the amount owed. The deferral will expire by the end of September for the Fall term or January for the Winter term. Interest will be assessed on outstanding amounts beyond the deferral deadline.

External scholarships can be sent by cheque (CAD or USD) or direct deposit to our Canadian bank account. Cheques should be mailed to:

English Courses for Francophones

Students who have been admitted to a Bachelor's level program for the Fall term are eligible to take either CESL 150 or CESL 299 and be reimbursed for tuition at the Quebec rate upon completion of the course. Administrative fees applicable to the course are also reimbursed. Activity fees associated with languages courses are not reimbursed. The amount will be reimbursed to the student's fee account in mid-September and will be reported on a T4A (scholarship income) slip in February.
