When is an Apostille needed?

  • Students who are planning to continue their studies overseas or have an offer of employment in one of the signatory nations, may need to request an Apostille for their official documents.

What documents can have an Apostille added?

  • Visit the Ministry of Justice’s website for complete information on what documentation can receive an Apostille. In the case of McGill University, only official documents issued by the University. For example: official transcripts, diploma or certificate, proof of enrolment or graduation letter.

What is the process to obtain an Apostille in Quebec?

  • In the province of Quebec, the competent authority for issuing an Apostille for documents issued or notarized in Quebec is the Ministry of Justice.

IMPORTANT: Quebec does not issue Apostilles for documents issued by a federal authority, a territory or another province. For more information on obtaining an Apostille on a document issued by a federal authority, territory or other province, visit the Global Affairs Canada website.

How do I obtain an Apostille for documents issued by McGill University?

  • Submit your request directly to the Ministry of Justice and provide the documents in the format they indicate.
  • The Ministry of Justice will contact McGill University to confirm the identity of the signatories, date of emission and seal on the submitted documents.
