On Friday, Feb 15, Adam Gopnik, the acclaimed New Yorker Magazine essayist and McGill alumnus will be delivering the 2013 Macnamara Lecture at McGill. Since 1986, Gopnik has written art criticism, fiction and humour pieces, book reviews, profiles, reporting pieces, and more than 100 articles for the magazine’s Talk of the Town and Comment columns. In 1990, he collaborated with Kirk Varnedoe to curate the exhibition “High & Low: Modern Art and Popular Culture,” at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and co-wrote the book of the same name. As a keen student both of the “high” culture of the visual arts, and the “low” culture of everyday life, he authored the entry on the culture of the United States in the most recent Encyclopaedia Britannica.
