McGill University student, Jonathan Glencross is recognized by Earth Day Canada for environmental achievement - Student establishes Sustainable Projects Fund and more

Toronto, ON – June 6, 2011
Earth Day Canada in partnership with Cascades Inc., RBC Foundation and Mill Street Brewery is pleased to announce Canada’s 2011 Individual Hometown Heroes Award winner, Jonathan Glencross. He will be honoured at Earth Day Canada’s annual Gala in the evening of June 8 in Toronto at the Drake Hotel in front of 500 business and environmental leaders.

“Jonathan is an environmental leader who has shown commitment and achieved results in his community,” says Jed Goldberg, president of Earth Day Canada. “He is an unsung hero of the environmental movement in Canada and works tirelessly for a cause that every household in Canada is concerned about.”

Jonathan’s significant contribution at McGill University was the coordination of the Sustainable McGill Project. This project makes university culture, curriculum and operations more sustainable through cyclic assessment, short and long-term goal setting and community engagement. Jonathan is the co-founder of the McGill Food Systems Project which works to create a campus community-wide sustainable food system.

Another of Jonathan’s impressive accomplishments is the creation of the Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF) which, valued at $2.5 million is accessible to the entire campus community and is based on the contributions from McGill students being matched by the university administration.

The SPF facilitates the planning, financing and implementation of projects that promote the principles of sustainability. The largest fund of its kinds, the SPF is self-reproducing and has already financed over 45 projects to give back to the campus community in a lasting way.
