Welcome to the TONE Project homepage!

The TONE (Timbre and Orchestration Network) Project is an international transdisciplinary partnership funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) that links research and creation with the goal of examining orchestration practices—traversing musical cultures, styles, and genres—and their perceptual effects on listeners from a global perspective through collaborations among world-class artists, humanists, and scientists.

TONE follows the success of the Analysis, Creation and Teaching of Orchestration (ACTOR) project, another 7-year partnership that ran from 2018-2025 with 19 partner institutions from Canada, United States, and Europe, with the goal to bring timbre and orchestration to the forefront of scholarship, practice, and public awareness. Visit the ACTOR archive and learn more about its research and outcomes.

Most of ACTOR's outputs, including research project reports, articles, essays, interviews, and videos, are housed in an open-access web platform called TOR or Timbre and Orchestration Resource. This site aims to support the analysis, creation, and teaching of timbre and orchestration by providing materials and tools for users at different levels of expertise, from amateurs to experts.

Timbre & Orchestration Summer School - TOSS

The ACTOR project initiated and hosted the three first editions of the Timbre & Orchestration Summer School (TOSS), respectively held in Thessaloniki (2023), Vancouver (2024), and Montreal (2025). The goal was to organize an event that would bring together researchers, students, and professionals to explore the multifaceted world of timbre and orchestration.
