Important updates for Fall 2024 applicants

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you’ll find important updates for Fall 2024 applicants. We hope that you keep McGill at the top of your list as we approach the February 1 application deadline

Do students at McGill have to learn French?

Students beginning their studies in the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 semesters will not be required to achieve French proficiency before graduating. We can confirm there will be no French language requirements for these students throughout their degree, even if future policies come into effect.

The Quebec government has proposed French-language requirements for students enrolling in 2025-26 and beyond, and negotiations are ongoing. We are doing all we can to ensure a McGill degree remains accessible for students across Canada and the world.

Will the recently announced cap on international students by the government of Canada impact my ability to get a study permit to attend McGill?

Preliminary indications are that the cap on international student permit applications announced by the Government of Canada on January 22, 2024, is not likely to affect McGill’s ability to welcome international students. We encourage admitted candidates to begin the immigration process immediately. As more details emerge, we will communicate with students.

Where can I find tuition fees for international students?

The 2024-2025 tuition fees for non-exempt international students have been posted. International students benefit from a guaranteed, set tuition rate throughout their degree. This allows prospective students to see the total cost of tuition for their degree program before committing to McGill.

Has the application deadline for international students been extended?

Is McGill tuition increasing for Canadian students who are not residents of Quebec?

Tuition for Canadian non-Quebec residents was increased from approximately $9,000 to $12,000. Students in most programs will receive a new Canada Award offered by McGill to offset this increase.

What is the Canada Award?

McGill is offering the Canada Award to Canadian non-Quebec resident undergraduate students studying full time in most disciplines (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Science, Bachelor of Arts & Science (BA&Sc), Education, Music, and Nursing). This award will offset the tuition increases recently announced by the Government of Quebec for these students. The Canada Award is renewable for up to four years of study and applied automatically. This will bring tuition for new students in line with 2023-24 tuition levels.

Who is eligible for the Canada Award?

Students enrolling full time in undergraduate programs in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Science, Bachelor of Arts & Science (BA&Sc), Education, Music, and Nursing are eligible.

Approximately 80% of Canadian students who are not Quebec residents will benefit from a tuition level similar to the 2023-34 tuition rate.

What other financial aid and awards are available for incoming students?

McGill offers merit and need-based awards for incoming and returning students. We rank #1 in Canada for our scholarship and bursary offerings.

All students, regardless of citizenship, are eligible to apply for financial aid.
