Movement “Doing it”

Bring your knowledge into the classroom, create an inclusive and supportive space for discussion, and invite your students to walk alongside with you. Take action with the help of resources on Indigenous pedagogy and decolonizing teaching and see our page Walking with Care.

This video provides insight into how teachers can get started, even in small ways, to learn more about Indigenous peoples and pedagogies in their reconciliatory practice.

RESOURCES

Indigenous pedagogy & decolonizing teaching How do I decolonize my curriculum and pedagogical practices in meaningful and respectful ways? Engaging with Indigenous Perspectives: Teaching Resources compiled by the Department Of Integrated Studies in Education including Orange Shirt Day Resources, TRC Guide and resources for instructors who wish to learn about Indigenous approaches to education. They are shared to provide background information, encourage reflection, inform instructors’ pedagogical decisions where appropriate, and potentially act as conversation-starters.

The Concordia Center for Teaching and Learning provides you with Indigenous evidence-based research, tools and resources to re-frame your curriculum and pedagogical practices in ways that promote critical discourse, analysis and integration of Indigenous Peoples’ diverse intellectual, cultural, agricultural, and scientific knowledge systems.

Book cover "Our Words Our Ways"Our Words Our Ways: Teaching First Nations, Métis & Inuit Learners:

"This resource is intended to help classroom teachers and staff better serve the needs of their Aboriginal students. It offers information about Aboriginal cultures and perspectives, practical ideas, and sample strategies that will help teachers meet the needs and recognize the gifts of Aboriginal students. Many of the sample strategies are good for all students and are relevant for a range of educational settings and contexts. The resource is organized into seven chapters. Each chapter contains information, sample strategies, shared wisdom from Aboriginal scholars and Elders, and related stories shared by Aboriginal teachers and liaisons” - Alberta Government Publication.
