La Société d'alzheimer du Canada a publié une étude qui avance que d'ici 2030, près d'un million de personnes seraient atteintes de démence au pays s'il n'y a aucune mesure mise en place pour en réduire les risques. Le neurologue et professeur émérite Serge Gauthier estime qu'il s'agit en effet « du pire scénario », mais que plusieurs décisions peuvent être prises, individuellement et collectivement, pour agir en prévention.

Hitting the road? Turn off the GPS, it’s bad for your brain
“We did spatial memory tests and found that degradation was correlated to GPS frequency,” said Véronique Bohbot, a scientist at the Douglas Research Centre and a professor of psychiatry at McGill University. “There was a difference between people who use GPS every day for every trip and the people who didn’t use GPS at all or just occasionally, say, once a month.”

What if you learn your father is not your father?
Rob Whitley, an associate professor in McGill University’s department of psychiatry, was at a conference in Brussels a few years ago when the subject came up in a talk about the social aspects of DNA testing given by Belgian biologist and geneticist Maarten Larmuseau. “And I was thinking, ‘This will have huge mental-health impacts,'” recalled Whitley, a research scientist at the Douglas Research Centre.

It is with great pleasure that we announce this year’s winners of the annual Leyton Addiction Research Prize. The competition was strong, but the review committee agreed that two papers deserved to share this year’s $1,000 prize, Maisha Iqbal’s paper titled A three-factor model of common early onset psychiatric disorders: temperament, adversity, and dopamine and Jose Maria Restrepo’s paper titled Corticolimbic DCC gene co-expression networks as predictors of impulsivity in children. Maisha is a master’s student supervised by Dr. Marco Leyton.
