PHOPHLO
Phophlo is a screening tool with the aim of predicting written language skills via oral language skills in francophone children attending school in Quebec. It consists of 4 games that evaluate speech perception, speech production, phonological awareness (rime), and morphological production.
This screener is administered in grade one and predicts written language ability by the end of grade two with a sensibility of 71% and a specificite of 93% (Rvachew et al., 2017).

Phophlo est une tâche visant le Prédiction des Habilités Orthographiques Par les Habilitées de Langage Oral (PHOPHLO). Il regroupe 4 jeux évaluant respectivement la perception des sons de la parole, la production de mots, la conscience phonologie (rime) ainsi que la production morphologique (mise de verbes au passé).
Administré en première année du primaire, il permet de prédire les habilités d'épellation à la fin de la deuxième année avec une sensibilité de 71% et une spécificité de 93% (Rvachew et al., 2017).

Test Francophone de Phonologie
In our lab, we have developed two tools for assessing speech accuracy in francophone children. Both tests were carefully constructed to match the segmental and syllable structure of spoken Quebec French.
The first tool, the Test de Dépistage Francophone de Phonologie (TDFP), has 30 items. This test can be used as a screening tool to identify children that have difficulties with phonology (speech accuracy). Normative data was collected for kindergarten and first grade children. The second tool, the Test Francophone de Phonologie (TFP), has 54 items and can be used for treatment planning purposes. The authors are preparing publications that will demonstrate how to use this diagnostic version for treatment planning. This information should be available in one year's time. Dans notre laboratoire, nous avons développé deux outils pour évaluer les difficultés de la parole des enfants francophones. Les deux tests ont été construits minutieusement de manière à respecter la structure segmentale et syllabique du français québécois à l'oral.
Le premier outil, le Test de Dépistage Francophone de Phonologie (TDFP), comporte 30 items. Ce test peut être utilisé comme outil de dépistage afin d'identifier les enfants qui ont des troubles phonologiques. Des normes ont été établies à partir de données amassées auprès d'enfants de maternelle et de première année. Le deuxième outil, le Test Francophone de Phonologie (TFP), comporte 54 items et peut être utilisé pour la sélection et la planification des objectifs à travailler en thérapie. The ECRIP Project
Children who present with a phonological disorder misarticulate more speech sounds than other children their age. They also have poorer speech perception abilities and phonological awareness abilities than their peers and are more at risk of presenting with reading difficulties. The objective of the research project was to test the relative efficacy of different combinations of three intervention components (individual therapy, home program and small group intervention) to improve speech production accuracy and phonological awareness skills in francophone children with a developmental phonological disorder. We found that the children responded very well to a combination of treatments that involved surprisingly little direct speech practice when all elements were implemented in a coherent fashion, specifically (input oriented individual speech therapy using the procedures focused stimulation, auditory bombardment, error detection tasks, and minimal pairs therapy; small group therapy targeting phonological awareness (teaching implicit knowledge of syllables, onsets and rimes); and a parent group intervention (teaching dialogic reading techniques). The intervention was implemented over a 12 week period with the individual treatment occurring first and the two group interventions following in the second 6 week block.
This randomized control trial was funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada grant to Dr. Susan Rvachew. The project was coordinated by Françoise Brosseau-Lapré, Ph.D., S-LP(c) who was supported by a doctoral fellowship from le Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec. Dr. Brosseau-Lapré is currently an Assistant Professor at Purdue University.
