An important component of machine learning is knowledge acquisition. This is an extremely useful approach for extracting the "know-how" that various experts use on a daily basis but have difficulty in describing. By working in combination with the computer, such methodologies as case-based reasoning or decision-tree induction can help the expert to transform some portions of his/her extertise into software code for widespread use throughout the industry.
Using decision-tree induction, the group has developed a software prototype for the analysis of lactation curves and the flagging/detection of potential areas in need of attention by the farmer or the advisor.
