Welcome to the Teaching Assistant Resources Page

As a Teaching Assistant, you play a vital role in the academic journey of our students, acting as a bridge between faculty and learners. This page is a helpful resource to provide you with the essential tools, guidelines and support to excel in your role. For Graduate Students that are interested in, or currently hold a Teaching Assistant position; you will find valuable information here to help you navigate your responsibilites, enhance your teaching skills and contribute effectively to the learning environment in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, in the Faculty of Education. 

What is a Teaching Assistant?

A Teaching Assistant (TA) is a graduate student appointed to assist a Course Supervisor with the instruction and evaluation of students in a course. A teaching assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Course Supervisor who is responsible for setting the course objectives, content and method of instruction as well as final grades and grading practices of the course. 

Teaching Assistant Union

All hired Teaching Assistants at McGill University are required to be a member of the Association of Graduate Students Employed at McGill (AGSEM) - McGill's Teaching Union. All Teaching Assistants are protected by a Collective Agreement. The Collective Agreement is a contract between AGSEM and McGill that outlines your terms of employment. If you are interested in working as a teaching assistant, please note that all positions are posted on and applied to through Workday by the dates outlined below.

Positions are posted three times/year, by the following dates:

Fall *NEW* The third (3rd) Monday of May for Fall and Full Year courses; Positions shall remain posted for 15 days
Winter *NEW* The third (3rd) Monday of October for Winter courses
Summer *NEW* The second (2nd) Monday of March for Summer courses;

TA Workload Form (fillable .pdf)

TA workload form: Complete with the Course Instructor and submit to admin.dise [at] mcgill.ca approximately 2 weeks after the start of classes.

 

Fall 2024 Semester DEADLINE: Thursday, September 11, 2024 at 5:00PM (TAs and Instructors are to retain an official copy for use in October, see below)

Winter 2025 Semester DEADLINE: Thursday, January 9, 2025 at 5:00PM (TAs and Instructors are to retain an official copy for use in February, see below)

 

 

A Mid-Term evaluation is also required on the TA Workload form. Forms completed at the start of the semester will be redistributed to TAs for mid-term reviews with the Course Lecturers.

 

Fall 2024 Mid-Term TA Workload form review deadline: Friday, October 18, 2024 at 5:00PM (TAs and instructor review their original Workload form - a second set of signatures are required).

Winter 2025 Mid-Term TA Workload form review deadline: Friday, February 28, 2025 at 5:00PM (TAs and instructor review their original Workload form - a second set of signatures are required).

Fall 2024 Semester DEADLINE: Friday, December 20, 2024 at 5:00PM

Winter 2025 Semester DEADLINE: Friday, April 18, 2025 at 5:00PM

Please note that all of the forms above must be completed and signed by the instructor and teaching assistant before submitting.

FAQ

What is the hourly rate for TAs?

Rates of Pay as of:

  • Current rate is $36.25 - Vacation pay (6%) and statutory holiday (3.6%) compensation included
  • Effective rate First Sunday of August 2025: $37.34 - Vacation pay (6%) and statutory holiday (3.6%) compensation included
  • Effective rate First Sunday of August 2026: $38.46 - Vacation pay (6%) and statutory holiday (3.6%) compensation included

When will I be notified if I am offered a position?

Approximately 35 days from the application deadline.  Please note only selected applicants will be contacted. A notice will be sent to all selected applicants' McGill student email account (@mail.mcgill.ca) and you will receive an official offer via Workday.

Can I hold multiple Teaching Assistantships?

Yes. As long as the total combined hours for all TAships do not exceed 180 hours in one semester.

Will I have to attend the course lectures?

A majority of the positions will require attendance during classes. If you have been offered a teaching assistantship, please check with the instructor whether this will be a requirement, and if so, please verify that you are available during class hours before accepting a position.
