Lab Resource Initiative

MTS testing machine Introduction

Welcome to the Lab Resource Initiative of the NSERC/McGill Design Engineering Chair for Interdisciplinary Innovation of Medical Technologies!

As a shared equipment, our laboratories serve students, researchers, clinicians, and companies across the province of Quebec .

We are committed to supporting use of biomechanical and orthopaedic technologies in research, production, and testing applications.

Mission

Our goal is to provide researchers with efficient access to biomechanical and orthopaedic technologies, with the objectives:

  • To provide shared lab capabilities with advanced equipment, skilled personnel, and effective training;
  • To enable high quality research both at undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • To ensure safety and responsibility in research activities;
  • To promote fundamental knowledge in specialized manufacturing and testing technologies;
  • To propagate knowledge to the research community.

All McGill research laboratories willing to join this initiative are welcome to contact us.

Orthopaedic Research Laboratory

The Orthopaedic Research Laboratory (ORL) is located in the Research Institute of the MUHC at the Montreal General Hospital. It includes machine tools and testing equipment including but not limited to the MTS servo-hydraulic testing machine with hydraulic pump, Instron Electroplus electric testing machine, drill press and band saw, Arthroscopic Surgical System. A full list of available equipment at the ORL can be found on the ORL website.

Biomaterials and Biomechanics Lab

The Biomaterials and Biomechanics Lab (BBL) is located in room MD356 of the Macdonald Engineering Building at McGill University and has in possession various bioengineering tools. The full list is available here.

Policies & Procedures

Lab membership

Our labs are open to anyone from any academic, government, private or industrial organization for any type of research and development activity that does not violate McGill University's policies and regulations.

Commercial activities (i.e., the production of devices for sale) are prohibited; however, R&D activities including prototype development are within acceptable activities.

Intellectual Property Policy at ORL and BBL

ORL and BBL make no claims to intellectual property developed independently by researchers using the labs. For more specific detail, please refer to McGill University policies and regulations.

Lab Hours

The lab and lab staff are available generally during working hours (Monday through Friday, approximately 9 am - 5 pm). The labs routinely shut down between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. Shutdowns may be extended to accommodate University-wide shutdowns for maintenance or special projects.

Safety

The safety of people is always of primary importance in any situation. However, equipment must be kept safe, too. When prioritizing how to apply safety to your working environment, consider the following:

  • People
  • External devices
  • Machine(s) and/or machine tools
  • Tooling
  • Workpiece

Workspace cleaning

After each use of the equipment the area must be cleaned.

The dust from the testing or other used machines, the instrument, and the tool, from the top of the working table and under it, the floor, and all other equipment must be removed. All dust must be swept and put into the garbage bucket; the content of the latter should be put into the dustbin in the corridor.

All tools used during operation must be placed into the storage.

All equipment should be turned off and disconnected from the power sources, the electric and control systems must be turned off.

Methods of payment

Methods of payment:

  • McGill Researchers - FOAPAL, cheques, cash,
  • External Researchers - cheques, cash.
