UGC-McGill PhD Fellowships

In the spring of 2024, McGill signed an agreement with the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) to co-sponsor Bangladesh students enrolled in a PhD program at McGill University. 

Value & Duration

UGC-McGill Fellows will benefit from the following funding:

  • A stipend for living expenses (15,000 CAD annually)
  • Health and living insurance plan (approx. 1,100 CAD)
  • Annual support from salary (approx. 9,800 CAD)
  • Cost of return airfare (approx. 3,000 CAD)

McGill in turn, will cover the full cost of tuition (including ancillary fees), as set each year by the Quebec Ministry of Higher Education (approx. 20,214 CAD annually), exclusive of health insurance.

Funding is provided for up to four (4) years for PhD students.

Eligibility

  • Must be a citizen of Bangladesh
  • Must currently have a teaching position in the public university in Bangladesh and will return to Bangladesh after their degree
  • Must be selected by the UGC as a recipient
  • Must apply and receive an Offer of Admission from McGill for a PhD
  • The program must align with the priority fields established by the UGC.

Priority Fields

Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Drug Discovery, Molecular Pathology and Diagnostics, Biobanking, Computational Biology, Population and Global Public Health, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing and Big-Data Analytics, General STEM fields, Medicine, Information and Communications Technology, Architecture, Food Science, Business, Arts, Law and Social Sciences, and Education.

How to Apply

Application Process:

  1. Candidates shall apply to the McGill doctoral program of their choice directly through the McGill University website. Candidates should apply before August 1st for the session starting January (Winter session) and by January 15th for the session starting in Sept (Fall session). Candidate should specify in their applications that they are applying through the UGC-McGill Fellowships program.
  2. McGill will evaluate the candidates’ applications and make acceptance decisions at its own discretion.
  3. McGill will provide a list of provisionally accepted candidates to UGC and will provide each provisionally selected applicant with a Conditional Offer Letter of Acceptance* to a graduate research-based program indicating that subsequent approval and provision of funding from UGC, Bangladesh will be required.
  4. After receiving the provisional acceptance list/s from McGill, UGC will apply its own evaluation system to select the candidates for final approval in the Fellowships program. For additional information refer to the UGC website.
  5. To secure the funding from UGC, the selected candidates shall sign a Contract including a condition that they must return to Bangladesh and resume teaching position in their respective university.
  6. Register at McGill when accepted by the UGC.

*Please note that the funding offered to you by McGill will be contingent on your successful application for a UGC Scholarship.

NOTE: UGC, Bangladesh & McGill University, Canada will preserve the rights to take any decision regarding UGC-McGill joint PhD Fellowship and that will be considered as the final decision.
