Reserve Your Academic Dress
You must reserve your cap, gown, and hood through Gaspard LP - McGill's exclusive supplier. Online reservations are now closed.
Reserved your cap and gown- check out the pickup schedule below to see where and when you must show up.
Missed the deadline to reserve your cap and gown online- note that extra regalia will be provided by the Regalia company the day before or the day of your ceremony. Refer to the pickup schedule below and show up as early as possible. You will have to pay the rental fee on site. And the number of extra caps and gowns available will be limited.
The line-up card lists your name, degree, and any honours you have been awarded. The information on the card will be read by the convocation orator as you cross the stage at the ceremony.
The perforated line-up card is picked up before your cap and gown. You must bring the line-up card with you to the ceremony.
Do not forget to bring:
› Your McGill ID card (should you not have your McGill ID card, you may use any other official piece of photo ID)
› A bag or garment bag and hanger to carry your regalia
If someone else is picking up your cap, gown and line-up card, they should bring your student ID card and a signed letter of permission specifying:
› your name
› your student number
› your degree
› your phone number
› the name of the person picking up your academic dress.
Pickup Schedule - Cap & Gown and Line-up Cards
Below is a schedule for cap, gown, and line-up card pick up. It is always advisable to plan to do this the day before the ceremony; however, if necessary, you may also pick up your cap and gown two hours prior to the beginning of the ceremony.
At the bookstore, you need to go to the line-up card pickup table before you proceed to the regalia pickup station.
Return Your Academic Dress
If you do not return your academic dress, you will be charged $210 for bachelors, $202 for masters, and $724 for doctoral dress, plus taxes. Please note that transcripts will not be issued until your academic dress is returned or the fees paid.
Graduating students crossing the stage must wear academic regalia; this consists of a gown (all graduates), a hood* (students obtaining a degree at the bachelor, master's, or doctorate level), and a hat (all graduates). Gowns are black for those receiving a certificate, diploma, undergraduate, or master’s degree, and red for those receiving a doctorate degree. Doctorate graduates wear a black Beefeater hat, while all other graduates wear a black mortarboard cap.
*There are no hoods for certificates or diplomas.
