Revisiting the Souths after Covid

Since April 2020, fifty researchers from the University of Montreal, McGill University, UQAM, Concordia, and HEC Montreal have been reflecting on progressive, pragmatic, and social science-based ideas that could improve international cooperation, security, and sustainable prosperity after COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end. Those reflections have culminated in the event series Les midis du Monde d'après.

In this, the fourth instalment in the series, Laurence Monnais, Christian Novak, and Robert Greenhill will be focusing on what role the private sector can and should play in promoting global development and health in the post-COVID world. This event is hosted by CÉRIUM and the Max Bell School of Public Policy.

Laurence Monnais

Member of the Centre d'études de l'Asie de l'Est (www.cetase.umontreal.ca), Laurence Monnais (PhD, University Paris 7) holds the Canada Research Chair in Healthcare Pluralism. She's also a researcher at the MEOS (she studies medication as a social object) and at the Research Institute of Public Health of UdeM (IRSPUM). Vice-president of the History of Medicine in Southeast Asia Centre (HOMSEA), she promotes research on the history of medicine in the southeastern region of Asia. Read more.

Christian Novak

Christian Novak is a Professor of Practice at McGill University - Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID). He focuses on development finance, particularly on the effective use of public and private capital to help achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The particular topics that he covers include: the operating models and methods of development finance institutions, blended finance, funding needs for the advancement of priority sectors and underserved segments of the population, environment finance, and impact investing.

Christian possesses experience in investment banking and in economic & social development, having worked for international banks and for a regional development finance institution. As Managing Partner of FMA - Frontier Markets Advisors, he provides advisory services in the field of development finance and impact investing. He graduated as a Public Accountant and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Catholic University of Argentina. Read more.

Robert Greenhill

Robert Greenhill is a CIGI senior fellow and executive chairman of the Global Canada Initiative. His research investigates Canadian global engagement and national multi-stakeholder fora to support engagement on the global stage.

Robert served as managing director and chief business officer at the World Economic Forum. Prior to this, he was president and deputy minister of the Canadian International Development Agency and a senior visiting executive with the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa. Robert has also worked in the for-profit industry, serving in executive roles at Bombardier (including as president of Bombardier International) and working as a consultant for McKinsey & Company. 

Robert holds an M.B.A. from INSEAD in France, as well as an M.A. from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a B.A. from the University of Alberta. Read more.
