Access Mercury

You can access Mercury through this direct link to the Mercury system.

On your Mercury page, you will be able to:

  • Monitor response rates (Select "Response Rate")
  • View course evaluation results (Select "Reports")

Monitor response rates

Select the Response Rate link on your Mercury page to view response rates for the courses associated to your unit.

View reports

Select the Reports link on your Mercury page to view course evaluation reports that you have access to.

Access Mercury for Unit Head / Liaison

To access your unit's MERCURY page:

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Unit Heads: Select Faculty Menu.
    Liaisons: Select SR Admin Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Mercury - Department Access.

    On this page, Unit Heads and Liaisons can: Liaisons can also:
    • Preview and print course evaluation questionnaires;

    • Monitor departmental response rates;

    • Download individual course evaluation results as well as departmental summaries;

    • Download Teaching Assistant/Tutor reports.

    • Activate course evaluations;

    • Insert course evaluation dates; and

    • Insert instructor-submitted questions.

  5. You must choose a term and department. Then, you can choose to filter by subject code (e.g., SDST and WMST in the example below) and by course activity (e.g., Lecture or Seminar). Click Search to view the list of courses. All courses with an enrolment of 1 or more students will appear, as in the example below:

Preview and Print Course Evaluation Questionnaire

Preview Evaluation: allows you to view the course evaluation exactly as it appears to students.

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Unit Heads: Select Faculty Menu.
    Liaisons: Select SR Admin Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Mercury - Department Access.

  5. Select a Term and a Department (and optionally, Subject Code and Course Activity) and then click Search. All courses with an enrolment of 1 or more student will appear.

  6. Click on a course link, such as SDST 250 : 4154 A.

  7. Click on the Preview Evaluation button to view the course evaluation exactly as it appears to students.

  8. The Instructions that students see will appear first. Then, click on Continue to course evaluation to see the questions.

  9. A maximum of 10 questions appear per page. Click on Go to Question #... to access other pages of the questionnaire.
    If the course is in the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law, or the School of Continuing Studies, your questionnaire is offered in both English and in French. Select a language in the Choose another language drop-down menu to view the questionnaire in either language.

Print Evaluation: allows you to download and/or print a PDF copy of the course evaluation questionnaire.

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Unit Heads: Select Faculty Menu.
    Liaisons: Select SR Admin Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Mercury - Department Access.

  5. Select a Term and a Department (and optionally, Subject Code and Course Activity) and then click Search. All courses with an enrolment of 1 or more student will appear.

  6. Click on a course link, such as SDST 250 : 4154 A.

  7. Click on the Print Evaluation button to download and/or print a PDF copy of the course evaluation questionnaire.

  8. Open or save the file on your computer. When you open the file, it will appear as follows.

Monitor Departmental Response Rates

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Unit Heads: Select Faculty Menu.
    Liaisons: Select SR Admin Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Mercury - Department Access.

  5. Select a Term and a Department (and optionally, Subject Code and Course Activity) and then click Search. All courses with an enrolment of 1 or more student will appear. The page that appears contains the current response rate.

Download Individual Course Evaluation Results

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Unit Heads: Select Faculty Menu.
    Liaisons: Select SR Admin Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Mercury - Department Access.

  5. Select a Term and a Department (and optionally, Subject Code and Course Activity) and then click Search. All courses with an enrolment of 1 or more student will appear.

  6. Click on a course link, such as SDST 250 : 4154 A.

  7. Click on the Select format... drop-down menu next to Response Data and select one of the five options, which are detailed below.

Graphs

  • This format includes the results of each question in the questionnaire.

  • To the right of the bar graph is the number of students who selected each option.

  • To the left of the bar graph is the correpsonding percentage of students who selected each option.

  • Click the View Comments button to see the comments associated to a specific question. Not all questions contain comment boxes.

Next to each question you will find the following:

  • valid responses

  • blank responses

  • comments

  • mean

  • standard deviation

  • standard deviation of the mean

  • department mean (DM)

  • department course mean (DCM)

  • standard deviation from department mean

  • standard deviation from department course mean

Student Comments Only

  • The Student Comments Only format shows all comment-type questions along with student responses. (Note: not all questions contain comment boxes.)

  • The number of students who did not enter a comment is displayed.

Download Excel File (Text, Numerical)

  • The Excel formats (text and numerical) display results as submitted by each responder.

  • Include both multiple choice and comment responses as well as the date and time submitted.

  • Both versions contain the raw means for each question.

Text Report

  • The text report format (.pdf) shows frequency of responses for each of the multiple choice questions.

  • Both departmental mean calculations are included if they have been calculated. Departmental means are usually available a few weeks after the end of the default evaluation period.

  • For best printing results, print using legal size paper and select “Landscape mode."

Download Teaching Assistant/Tutor Reports

Some questionnaires feature drop-down menu questions that allow students to pick an individual to evaluate for the following set of questions. This is used for Teaching Assistants, Tutors, and in some cases, guest lecturers.

Note that Teaching Assistants and Tutors may access their results through their own access. More information on TA/Tutor access

If there are multiple individuals in the drop-down menu, the data is aggregated for all individuals by default. Follow the steps below to access the reports by individual. 

  1. Open the Graphs view of the course evaluation results (see "View/Download Course Evaluation Results" above for more details.)

  2. Scroll down to a question that asks students to select a Teaching Assistant or Tutor. In the example below, Question 13 allows students to pick one of two Teaching Assistants to evaluate. Question 14 contains aggregated data for the two Teaching Assistants.

  3. Click on the Sort Results button to view individual reports.

  4. The questions associated to the Teaching Assistants or Tutor will be pre-selected for you. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. 
    Click submit. The TA questions will be pre-selected for you

  5. Select one of the Teaching Assistants or Tutors from the drop-down menu to view the sorted results. The results for the selected individual will automatically appear below.

  6. To view the results for another Teaching Assistant/Tutor: select the option from the drop-down menu above.
    To view comments (if any): click on the View Comments button.
    To return to the overall results: click on the Go Back to Complete Results button.

Download Departmental Summaries

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Unit Heads: Select Faculty Menu.
    Liaisons: Select SR Admin Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Mercury - Department Access.

  5. Select a Term, Department, and Course Activity (and optionally, filter by Subject Code) and then click Search. All courses with an enrolment of 1 or more student will appear.Department view of results

  6. The departmental summary options are available at the bottom of your MERCURY page. There are four different views available, which are detailed below.

View Departmental Means

Click View Departmental Means button to view the Department Mean (DM), Department Course Mean (DCM), and respective standard deviations for each question in your unit's questionnaire.

NOTE: Departmental means are calculated separately for each questionnaire in use in your unit. Click on the name of the questionnaire to view the departmental means and standard deviations for courses evaluated with that questionnaire.

The results will display as follows. Click Download Dept Means to download a PDF version of this data.

Departmental means are typically available two weeks after the end of the evaluation period. If your unit's departmental means are not available, please contact the mercury.info [at] mcgill.ca (Mercury System Administrator).

View Summary of Results

Click the View Summary of Results button to download an Excel file that contains for each instructor evaluated:

  • the mean score for each question in the questionnaire;

  • the number of completed evaluations;

  • the number of declined evaluations;

  • the number of registered students; and

  • the response rate.

It also contains the average response rate for the unit and the questions in the questionnaire.

NOTE: The Summary of Results documents are produced separately for each questionnaire in use in your unit. Click on the name of the questionnaire to download the Excel file.

Download All Dept Text Files

Click the Download All Dept Text Files button to bulk download all text reports in your unit. The text report format shows the frequency of responses for each multiple choice question and the departmental mean (DM) and departmental course mean (DCM), if they have been calculated.

Download All Dept Comments

Click the Download All Dept Comments button to aggregate all comments for one or multiple questions in your questionnaire, separated by course and instructor.

NOTE: Departmental comments are aggregated separately for each questionnaire in use in your unit. Click on the name of the questionnaire to proceed.

Only questions that contain comment boxes will appear. Check off the box(es) next to the comment question(s) you are interested in viewing and click Submit.

View Disseminated Results in your Unit

Numerical course evaluation results are disseminated when both of the following conditions are met:

  1. The instructor has not objected to access; and

  2. an adequate response rate has been received.

Written comments are always treated as confidential and are never disseminated.

  1. Log into Minerva.

  2. Select Faculty Menu.

  3. Scroll down and select Mercury Online Course Evaluation Menu.

  4. Select Results - for the Community.

  5. Select your search criteria either by subject code (department), instructor, or course; then click Submit.

    • To view multiple subject codes (departments) or instructors, use the CTRL or Command(⌘) key when making your selections.

    • You may also wish to look at specific terms; however, at least one instructor or subject code must be chosen first.

  6. The following lists the results based on your search. Click View to view a course's numerical results. NOTE: Because this site is public, the instructors' names have been erased from the screenshow below.List of publicly available results

  8. To perform another search, click the Go back button on the search results page in Step 6.
