Seven McGill faculty members elected to prestigious Royal Society of Canada
McGill University is pleased to announce that the following faculty members are among the 82 new Fellows announced by the Royal Society of Canada.
Founded in 1882, the RSC is Canada's oldest and most prestigious scholarly society. This year's new Fellows will be inducted at a ceremony to be held in Ottawa on Sunday, November 19, 2006.
The seven new McGill RSC Fellows are:
Division of Humanities
Prof. Yvan Lamonde
Prof. Lamonde joined McGill in 1978. He was Director of the French-Canadian Studies Centre from 1980 to 1985, and has been a professor in the Department of French Language and Literature since 1993. His main areas of teaching and research have been Quebec literature and civilization and the methodology of research and history of ideas in Quebec, fields in which he has published widely and directed numerous theses and dissertations.
Prof. Brian Young
Prof. Young has taught history at McGill since 1975. As well as teaching pre-Confederation Canadian history and the history of Quebec before World War I, he gives upper-level and graduate courses in the history of Montreal and Quebec institutions. His research interests centre on the social and cultural experience of the 19th-century Quebec elite. His publications include the widely read text, co-authored with John Dickinson, A Short History of Quebec (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2002), translated as Brève histoire socio-économique du Québec (Septentrion, 2003), and Respectable Burial: A History of Montreal's Mount Royal Cemetery (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2003).
Division of Social Sciences
Prof. Laurette Dubé
Prof. Dubé is the James McGill Professor of Consumer Psychology and Services Marketing and Management at the Desautels Faculty of Management. She holds a research-career award jointly funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Prof. Dubé's research interests include the integration of emotions and other facets of the less rational side of human behaviour in health promotion, disease prevention, and health services delivery and management. Her work in the consumer domain combines experimental approaches with the dynamic modeling of emotions.
Division of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
Prof. Jacques Derome
Prof. Derome is a full professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and has held the position of Chair of the Department, most recently from 1994 to 1998. His research is in the area of climate dynamics, variability and predictability. Prof. Derome is principal investigator in the Canadian Climate Variability Research (CLIVAR) Network, which is funded by NSERC and CFCAS. He has published over 50 publications in refereed journals.
Division of Life Sciences
Dr. Ernesto L. Schiffrin
Dr. Schiffrin, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine, holds a Canada Research Chair in vascular and hypertension research. His research interests focus on the biology of blood vessels and hypertension. He has authored more than 350 publications in the field. Dr. Schiffrin has been President of the Canadian Hypertension Society (1991-92), Vice-Chair and Chair-Elect of the High Blood Pressure Research Council of the American Heart Association (2000-2004), and Secretary of the American Hypertension Society (1999-2002).
Dr. Michel Tremblay
Dr. Tremblay is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Director of the McGill Cancer Institute. Dr. Tremblay's research focuses on the role of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases) in the development of cancer. Under Dr. Tremblay's directorship, the institute also investigates the role of the PTP1b enzyme in diabetes, obesity and cancer.
Dr. Thomas J. Hudson
Dr. Hudson was named to the Society for his work at McGill as the founder and Director of the McGill University and Génome Québec Innovation Centre. Dr. Hudson is internationally renowned for his work in genomics and taught at McGill in the departments of Human Genetics and Medicine, and practiced medicine at the McGill University Health Centre — Montreal General Hospital (Division of Immunology and Allergy). He recently was appointed to the position of President and Scientific Director of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, effective September 1, 2006.
