When Hairy meets the shaver

Published: 20 October 2003

Adam Conter's hair is about to hit the floor. The third-year student has spearheaded a McGill chapter of Mix 96's Shave to Save Campaign, which raises funds for breast cancer research and treatment.

Conter will go the way of Kojak on October 21, at noon, in the lobby of the Leacock Building (855 Sherbrooke St. W.). To date, Conter has raised over $2,500. His ultimate goal is to raise $4,000. He's especially grateful to McGill's student bar, Gert's Pub, which donated about $1,000 of proceeds during a fundraising night on October 16.

Conter embarked on his hairy mission because his best friend's mother was a victim of breast cancer 11 years ago. "It was my friend's birthday last August and I couldn't think of a better present than to organize this event," he says, adding that he has been working hard to find volunteers and collect donations around the McGill downtown campus.

Conter's Shave to Save Campaign is part of a larger effort launched by the MIX 96 radio station, which has raised over $280,000 this year. Anyone who raises $2,000 gets their head shaved by a La Coupe stylist on a Mix 96 broadcast and food from Mike's restaurant.

Other hairless fundraisers from McGIll's Accounting Department, Gertrude Vitesi and Kevin Mitchell, did also go bald. The dynamic duo raised $2,000. Their hair was clipped on October 9.

This is not the first time Conter has supported cancer-related causes, including the Run for the Cure Campaign in his native Halifax. "I enjoy putting time and effort into this because I have been exposed to the horrible consequences of breast cancer," he says.
