Genetics of hydatidiform moles and reproductive failure

Biography:

Dr Rima Slim’s research focuses on the genetics of fetal loss of female origin. She initiated her work on a particular form of this condition, called molar pregnancy, an abnormal human pregnancy where the embryo stops developing very early but its placenta continues to grow. Her group has identified four genes responsible for recurrent moles including NLRP7, which explains the etiology of 55% of patients with at least 2 moles. The three other genes, MEI1, TOP6BL, and REC114, explain the etiology of a small fraction of patients with moles but are also responsible for male and female infertility.
