MUHC OCULAR SIMULATION LABORATORY & THE MCGILL OCULAR SIMULATION PROGRAM

The MUHC Ocular Simulation Laboratory, located at the McGill Academic Eye Centre, is the first of its kind comprehensive ocular simulation program in Canada, and one of the few in the world. It is unique in that it encompasses, under one roof, aspects of clinical and diagnostic ocular simulation, surgical simulation using virtual reality devices as well as fully equipped workstations. In addition, there is already an active simulation research program involving the study of non-technical surgical skills, the testing of new devices and a partnership with the Surgical and Interventional Sciences Department in terms of robotics research. This has been designed as an interdisciplinary program. In terms of education, it will benefit ophthalmology residents and fellows, but also medical students. It will also provide educational activities to other medical disciplines, including pediatrics, emergency medicine, family medicine and neurology. We have several facets to the educational aspect of simulation. It is also unique in that an effort has been made to make it sustainable through generous donations. The inauguration of the laboratory took place on February 7, 2025.
