To qualify for an elective at McGill, you must meet the following requirements:

• You must be a medical doctor.
• You must be registered in a residency or fellowship program.
• If you did your MD in Quebec, you did not exceed more than 3 months of electives at any Quebec University as a resident/fellow.
• You must have made prior arrangements with the medical department where you'd like to do an elective.

Out-of-province trainees can complete a minimum of one period (=28 days) and a maximum of four periods of elective rotations at McGill University.

IMPORTANT: Your elective application and required documents must be received by the McGill PGME Office two months prior to the start of your elective rotation. Unfortunately, we will not consider applications that are late or that are missing documents.

Application Process:

• Please contact the McGill department where you'd like to do your elective, to ensure the team can accommodate your elective request. Follow the link to access the Residency Program Contact List. For rural sites, please read here.
• If you are coming to McGill for an elective that is a part of an Inter-institution Affiliation Agreement between McGill and your Home University, please contact pgrecords.med [at] mcgill.ca before submitting an application online.
• Submit your application using the Request and Payment Form and pay the application fee. Please note the application fee is non-refundable.

• If you are required to complete a rotation at McGill University due to an inter-university agreement and require a work permit to train in Canada, please contact our office for further information.

Required Documents:

• Copy of your medical degree (with English translation, if applicable).
• Proof of Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) malpractice insurance coverage – you can apply for CMPA insurance here.
• Proof of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or a work permit – note that Canadian passports are not accepted, please review the website for acceptable legal documents.
• Have your program director write a letter of support and funding, indicating that your salary will be maintained during your elective period. This letter must include the start and end dates of your elective as well as the elective program's name. It must be sent by e-mail me directly from your home university on official letterhead. The letter must be sent to pgrecords.med [at] mcgill.ca .
• The Immunization Record Form needs to be completed by all trainees in order to work at McGill hospitals and community clinics. Please ensure you submit your fully completed form to your base hospital representative.

Eligibility for Licensure:

• You must obtain a training card from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ). Once the CMQ receives all of the required documents from McGill, it will send you instructions by e-mail about how to obtain your training care.
