Hometown: Montreal, Quebec

About:Tamara Carver is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Kinesiology at McGill University. Prior to joining the Faculty of Education (2010), she completed two years of her doctoral studies in Rehabilitation Science at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy in the Faculty of Medicine. Tamara completed her Bachelor’s (1995-1998) and Master’s (2006-2008) degrees at Concordia University in the department of Exercise Science specializing in Athletic Therapy and Clinical Exercise Physiology.  In 2001, she founded a health and fitness company where she continues to work as a Certified Fitness Consultant and Stott Pilates Certified Instructor in Rehabilitation Pilates.  She is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, The Obesity Society, and the Canadian Obesity Network. Her research involves working with severely obese individuals where she is examining changes in lean tissue mass, bone mineral density, metabolic efficiency, and muscle quality following metabolic surgery.

Masters and Graduate Diplomas

Name: Marie-Alexandria Tremis

Education: B.Sc. Anatomy & Cell Biology

Hometown: Montreal, Quebec

About me: As a graduate from McGill University with a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy and Cell Biology (2012) and an aspiring medical student, I am very mindful of the importance of healthy eating habits and regular physical activity on our overall well-being. Consequently in 2012, I joined Dr. Andersen and his team as a Volunteer Research Assistant to aid in collecting fundamental data (through interviews and various measurement practices) from follow-up bariatric patients. Concurrently, I am undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Management with a Healthcare Concentration, where I study the administrative and legal aspects of the Canadian healthcare system. I hope to utilize this newfound perspective on the medical field as well as my growing knowledge and experience in medical research throughout my future endeavors.

Name: Justin Kim

Education: B.Sc. Biochemistry; M.Sc. Candidate Kinesiology, McGill University, 2013

Hometown: Oakville, Ontario

About me: I earned my undergraduate degree in biochemistry from McGill University in 2010, and began my research as a Master's student in the Health and Fitness Promotion laboratory at McGill in 2011.  With an interest in sports, fitness and nutrition, I decided to shift my focus to exercise physiology.  I'm currently working with the McGill Redmen varsity football team to determine the seasonal effects on body compostion and performance testing.  I will also be investigating the effects of eligibility, previous playing experience and position for my thesis.  To determine body composition, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) will be utilized.  Standard football-related fitness testing protocols will also be used to measure strength, speed and power, all of which are important to playing performance.  These methods will help to determine the effect of an offseason or an in-season on Canadian collegiate football players.

Name: Anastasia (Stacy) Dikareva

Education: B.Sc (Hons) Kinesiology, Simon Fraser University; Graduate Diploma in Clinical Research, McGill University; M.Sc. Candidate Kinesiology, McGill University, 2013

Hometown: Vancouver, British Columbia

About me: My interest in Kinesiology stems from an early fascination with the human body. During the final year of my undergraduate program I realized I wanted to further my interest in clinical research and enrolled in the graduate diploma in Clinical Research program in the Department of Experimental Medicine at McGill. Shortly thereafter, I received the opportunity to work with Dr. Andersen on a Master’s project focusing on physical activity promotion among bariatric surgery patients. My research interests focus on cardiovascular health, women’s health and physical activity.

Name: Hannah Lemke

Education: B.Sc. Honours Kinesiology, Queen's University, 2011; M.Sc. Candidate Kinesiology, McGill University, 2013

Hometown: Orangeville, Ontario

About Me: Currently, I am a second year Master’s of Science student in the Health and Fitness Promotions Lab here at McGill.  With the help of many lab mates, I am studying to explore the effects of weight loss on bone mineral density in post-bariatric patients.  I hope to disentangle many beliefs about how rapid and sustained weight loss can impact bone health in patients who have had weight-loss surgery.  Hopefully, results of my work will someday impact the way health care professionals consider caring for the bone health of their bariatric patients. Growing up and throughout my time at Queen’s University, I danced competitively across North America.  I specialized and competed in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Acrobatics and Contemporary. When I am not studying in Montreal, I enjoy practicing yoga, jogging, spinning and enjoying good food! I love to bake, cook and try lots of different foods from around the world.  I am also passionate about travelling with a desire to see so many countries.  It would be a dream come true to travel overseas and pursue a yoga teacher-training course.  In the future, I hope to attend medical school and work to better the lives of individuals within my community.

Name: Olivier Babineau

Education: B.Sc. Kinesiology; M.Sc. Candidate Kinesiology, McGill University, 2013

Hometown: Moncton, New Brunswick

About me: My personal interest in exercise science comes from my father and my involvement in a wide variety of elite sports while growing up. Undertaking my studies in physical activity and health was a natural progression from my experiences as an athlete and so I decided to pursue my masters in exercise physiology with Dr. Andersen. I am presently working on physical activity and inactivity monitoring using accelerometry in bariatric surgery patients. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in an array of individual and team sports in my youth/adolescence such as speed skating, running, hockey and soccer. During my soccer career, I had the chance to represent my province and country on a few occasions and recently travel with the Canadian University team to Shenzhen, China to take part in the 2011 World University Games.
