Les chaires dotées et les professorats sont parmi les plus hautes distinctions décernées à un membre du corps professoral. La création de certaines chaires remonte à la fondation de l’Université. Ces chaires rendent honneur à leurs titulaires et ont pour objectif de rendre hommage, de façon perpétuelle, aux généreuses personnes qui en sont à l’origine.
Ces chaires sont essentielles au recrutement et à la fidélisation de professeur(e)s de niveau supérieur. Les établissements d’enseignement de premier ordre comptent dans leurs rangs les plus grands esprits, les chercheuses et chercheurs les plus créatifs et le personnel enseignant le plus dévoué. En se bâtissant une équipe professorale de talent, l’Université bonifie son offre, ce qui favorise les collaborations stimulantes en recherche et contribue au recrutement des étudiantes et étudiants les plus brillants. Les chaires dotées soulignent l’apport sans cesse renouvelé de membres du personnel enseignant de haut calibre et dotent ces derniers du financement nécessaire à l’avancement de leurs recherches.
Le (la) titulaire d’une chaire dotée ou d’un professorat peut avoir une incidence positive sur des centaines de personnes par l’intermédiaire de ses cours, de son rôle de mentor(e) et de ses travaux. Grâce aux chaires dotées, les étudiantes et étudiants ont accès aux universitaires les plus éminents. Il leur est possible de travailler en laboratoire, par exemple, et d’apprendre ainsi plongés dans le monde de l’innovation et de la découverte plutôt qu’uniquement à partir de leurs manuels. Les dons en argent reçus par l’Université visent à en assurer l’essor global, mais il arrive que les philanthropes affectionnent certains champs d’études en particulier. En finançant des chaires dotées, les donatrices et donateurs peuvent amener les esprits les plus brillants à s’intéresser à des problèmes précis et faire accélérer les progrès dans ces domaines.
