Miscellaneous property insurance

The miscellaneous property insurance policy applies to McGill-owned equipment while it is off premises, leased or rented, and/or equipment that is borrowed or loaned.

Examples of miscellaneous property

  1. Non-owned property which is either on loan, leased, or borrowed for which the University is responsible. This includes the personal property of staff used for teaching and research while located on University property. This use must be approved by the unit head.
  2. Property owned by the University which is continuously or occasionally used off premises.
  3. Property which by its special nature requires specific insurance coverage (e.g., property donated to the University with stipulated insurance requirements).

Assessment

Determination of required insurance coverage is based on several factors:

  • On-campus / off-campus
  • Ownership, borrowing or lending of equipment
  • Agreement between the parties
  • Value
  • Transportation
  • Items in transit
  • Specific insurance coverage for equipment
  • Other

In order to verify whether an item qualifies for insurance coverage, we require the following information:

  1. A copy of the draft agreement between The Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning / McGill University and the third party outlining the obligations of both parties. If an agreement does not exist, please reach out to Legal Services for assistance.
  2. A duly-completed copy of the Miscellaneous Property Form.
  3. Upon request from RAIS only: A duly-completed copy of the Additional Questionnaire Form (sent upon request).
