Prevention visits
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, 2023 was the 4th costliest year in Canadian history with insured losses totaling 3.1 billion dollars. Investing the time and effort to reduce such losses is paramount, making prevention a key measure.
As part of our prevention responsibilities, Risk Advisory and Insurance Services works to identify places on campus that pose a higher risk of loss or damage and we conduct prevention visits. The prevention visit is intended as a learning opportunity and helps raise risk awareness with the goal of avoiding or minimizing future loss. The visits are also an important avenue in educating the members of the McGill community about their responsibilities. During such visits, our team looks closely at the space and meets with stakeholders to discuss prevention best practices.
Prevention visits can also be conducted following a specific request. Please contact us for more information.
Insurance inspections
As part of our main property insurance policy, our property insurers conduct regular inspections of McGill's buildings. During these inspections, our property insurer verifies specific components of McGill's property; for example, mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, and fire suppression systems.
Prevention reminders
Prevention plays an essential part in the management of the many risks inherent in university operations. We publish a regular series of important prevention reminders to help minimize the risk of loss and damage.
