  1. What is the objective of the Academy?
    • To recognize members of the clinical faculty who are outstanding physicians to their patients and excellent role models for their colleagues and trainees.
  2. Who may be nominated for membership?
    • Any physician who is a member of a clinical department of the School of Medicine and spends at least 50% of his or her time in clinical practice.
  3. What are the criteria for nomination and selection?
    • Excellence in following domains:
      • Clinical acumen and expertise – a ‘go-to clinician’: highly skilled clinician, innovative clinical methods, a scholarly approach to patient care. “If I faced a difficult clinical situation, I would seek this colleague’s guidance.”
      • Trustworthiness and global competence – a ‘doctor’s doctor’: prioritizes a respectful care environment, compassionate, advocates for patients and the greater community. “If I or a family member required care, this is a physician to whom I would turn.
      • A person of integrity and honor – a masterly and humane professional, ethical presence, morally just and honest. “I would entrust my welfare to this physician.”
      • A role model for colleagues and trainees: a ‘wise person’: a clinician with deep experience; a sought-after mentor and guide. “A physician who is widely admired and emulated.”
    • Teaching skills are not the primary criteria for this Award.
  4. What is the process of nomination?
    • Each clinical department will use its own internal process and may nominate up to a maximum number of nominees each year (see spreadsheet).
    • Not more than 31 nominees shall be presented each year to a Faculty Selection Committee.
    • Each dossier presented shall be accompanied by a letter of nomination from the Chair and not more than two letters of support from peers, trainees and/or patients.
    • The Faculty Selection Committee shall select not more than 8 candidates from amongst the nominees.
  5. How will the successful candidates be recognized?
    • The individuals selected will enter the Academy of Exemplary Physicians
    • Membership will be recognized with a certificate and lapel pin.
    • An annual ceremony will be held to celebrate the Laureates.
    • Members of the Academy may be invited to participate in a video interview and presented in an accessible podcast and archive.
    • Showcased in Departmental newsletters and rounds
