Apply for the Sustainable Labs Award

Published: 4 May 2018

Dear Colleagues,

As a follow-up to the creation of the McGill Sustainable Labs Guide last year, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Sustainable Labs Award and we are inviting you to apply.

A new initiative from the Sustainable Labs Working Group (a working group of the University Lab Safety Committee), the Sustainable Labs Award will recognize efforts made by members of McGill laboratories to make their labs more sustainable by integrating environmental, social and economic considerations into the way they work.

Any individual or group members of labs subject to inspection by McGill’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office are eligible.

Entries will be evaluated based on a) the results of the most recent inspection conducted by EHS, b) best practices applied in the lab’s operations and c) innovative sustainable lab practices that go above and beyond initiatives identified in the McGill Sustainable Labs Guide (these can be specific to a particular domain of research). Applicants should have demonstrated leadership and significant commitment to moving beyond compliance to exemplary practice.

Entries should be submitted no later than June 15th, 2018. The period covered by the entry is May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018. You will find more details on the eligibility criteria and the application process HERE.  You can also contact the SLWG Chair at Christian.bouchard [at] mcgill.ca.

The Sustainable Labs Working Group was established in October 2014 and brings together students, staff and faculty working to embed sustainability considerations into lab processes. Its actions are aligned with Research Action R-3 of McGill’s Vision 2020 Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (2017-2010), launched on December 1, 2017.
