While many of the courses listed below tend to work within the local community, several of their projects have taken place on McGill’s Downtown Campus, Macdonald Campus, and the Gault Nature Reserve. Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list. Campus as a Living Lab can be incorporated into many other courses at McGill, and the Office of Sustainability offers support for navigating this process.
ARCH 514: Community Design Workshop
Students undertake context-focused, community-based architectural projects in collaboration with external partners. This includes the exploration of challenges, needs, and opportunities in architectural and urban-design interventions on real sites through interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial collaboration.
ENVR 401: Environmental Research
Interdisciplinary teams of students work on a real-world research project that involves defining a problem, developing a methodology, assessing the social, ethical and environmental impacts, executing a study, and disseminating the results to the research community and the people affected.
FSCI 198: Climate Crisis and Climate Action
Students are introduced to a wide range of knowledge and experiences related to the climate crisis and are given opportunities to learn the skills necessary for individual and collective actions to address climate change. These skills include critical reading and thinking, cross-disciplinary dialogue, reflection, teamwork, and collaboration with peers.
FSCI 396: Undergraduate Research Project
This three-credit independent study elective brings together students, faculty, and staff to conduct projects aimed at researching and addressing issues in science education at the university level. Students engage with pedagogical literature and address teaching and learning topics such as the assessment of McGill science course activities, research into topic-related misconceptions, and research on and design of innovative teaching and learning strategies.
MSUS 401: Sustainability Consulting
Designed around a pro bono consulting engagement, students gain real-world experience using management consulting theories and tools to plan and implement projects that move organizations toward sustainability. Topics include consulting as an industry, different types of sustainability consulting, implementing change in organizations, and project management.
