Using self-reflection to engage students in the assessment of participation

Wednesday, May 1, 2024 13:00to15:00
McLennan Library Building Room MS-74, 3459 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 0C9, CA

When it comes to class participation, how well do our students know what is expected of them? How can we help students understand that participation can enhance their learning?

This pilot project in German and Spanish language courses is a starting point to show how two instructors communicated their expectations to students through descriptors rather than rubrics, which steps they took to engage students in class participation, and what students’ perspective was further to a survey they ran.

For our kick off to Assessment for Learning Month, McGill instructors Sun-Young Kim and Alejandra Barriales Bouche, who conducted the pilot, will offer lessons learned and invite a discussion on strategies for fostering class participation to advance learning.

Stick around after the discussion to network with instructor colleagues and learn more about upcoming Assessment for Learning Month activities. TLS staff will be on hand to answer your questions and provide advice about PASL, teaching and assessment strategies, and learning technologies.
