Work Permit Exemptions

Some categories of employment are exempt from the Work permit requirements. These include but are not limited to the following:

  • Academic consultants and examiners (R186(n));
  • Guest speakers (R186(j));
    Public Speakers for specific events such as a convention, graduation ceremonies, seminars, workshops, or other related teaching or research activity. In all cases, the event should not exceed 5 days.
  • Self-funded researchers (R186(a))
    Persons doing self-funded research are exempt from the Work permit requirement provided, as long as no Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident Employee is displaced, and there is no Employer-Employee relationship. Must not exceed 6 months.
  • Short-term (120 days) work permit exemption for researchers

Researchers coming for less than 120 days. Primary intended work must be research.

Applicable to highly-skilled worker (NOC 0 or A) coming to work for a short duration.
