Borealis: Store share, publish and discover research data! borealisdata.ca
Published: 1 June 2022

On June 23, Scholars Portal Dataverse is becoming Borealis, the Canadian Dataverse Repository / le dépôt Dataverse canadien. All links to the current Scholars Portal Dataverse site will be redirected to the new site - borealisdata.ca.

Borealis is a bilingual, multidisciplinary, secure, Canadian research data repository, supported by academic libraries and research institutions across Canada. Borealis supports open discovery, management, sharing, and preservation of Canadian research data. This new name reflects Borealis’s identity as a national service connecting Canadian researchers, and comes after consultation with research data management librarians and specialists across the country.

Please note that McGill Dataverse name will not change, but it will now be hosted on Borealis. Core services will remain the same. The McGill Dataverse is still the place where you can store, share, publish and discover research data.

  • An updated Terms of Use will go into effect on June 23. See the blogpost for more details.
  • For the most up-to-date news, follow Borealis on Twitter at BorealisData

What are the implications for the change?

  • DOIs will still work! All dataset handles and DOIs will continue to resolve to the appropriate dataset page
  • The McGill Dataverse URL will change in the following format: dataverse.scholarsportal.info/dataverse/mcgill -----> borealisdata.ca/dataverse/mcgill
  • After June 23, dataset citations will include the new name of the repository. If you are submitting a new paper, use the new citation.
  • There is no need for a new account! Your existing account information will be ported over to the new website and you can continue to use the same login credentials.
  • Users who use institutional accounts (i.e., Shibboleth, single sign-on) may experience temporary delays for login on June 23.
  • External metadata harvesters may be delayed post website launch
  • Dataset citations will be updated to reflect the new repository name after reindexing (expected to occur after the website launch)
  • During the transition for a short period of time, users may experience some issues with displaying search results and data citations due to dataset reindexing
