Join librarians and curators Allie Alvis, Winterthur Library, and Jacquelyn Sundberg, McGill Library, for a discussion and show and tell of some of the unexpected scrapbooks from both collections.
Historical Scrapbooks are fascinating! Each is a visual diary carefully curated by an individual or group. Every page turn reveals a selection of what the creators valued, found noteworthy, and worth keeping - and more importantly, mounting for display! In many ways, scrapbooks are the Instagram profiles of the past, where people curated their favourite images and created works.
We’ll page through selections of eclectic and unusual scrapbooks from the 19th century from both collections. Join us for a fascinating lunch hour!
About the Speakers:
Allie Alvis is the Curator of Special Collections at the Winterthur Library, a world-renowned independent academic research library focusing on American decorative arts, material culture, and society in a global context. Allie stewards and engages material spanning over 500 years of history, from manuscript inventories from the 1500s to shoe catalogs from the 1960s. Formerly a rare book cataloguer at Type Punch Matix and the special collections reference librarian of the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, Allie has built their career around sharing the weird and wonderful world of book history.
Jacquelyn Sundberg is Outreach librarian for the rare and special collections division at the McGill University Library. Combining experience in both public and academic libraries with her Masters degrees in English Literature and Information Studies, she uses her skillset to make library collections accessible to a broader audience. She curates the cookbook and children’s collections at McGill. Her work also includes grant projects, publications, multimedia projects, websites, videos, games, and knitting patterns.

Allie Alvis est la conservatrice responsable des Collections spéciales de la Winterthur Library, une bibliothèque de recherche indépendante de renommée mondiale axée sur les arts décoratifs, la culture matérielle et la société américaine dans un contexte international. Elle gère et manipule des documents qui couvrent 500 ans d’histoire, des collections de manuscrits du XVIe siècle aux catalogues de chaussures des années 1960. Anciennement catalogueuse de livres rares pour Type Punch Matrix et bibliothécaire de référence pour les collections spéciales de la Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, Allie Alvis a consacré sa carrière au merveilleux et étrange monde de l’histoire du livre.
Jacquelyn Sundberg est bibliothécaire pour la Division de livres rares et fonds collections spéciales de la Bibliothèque de McGill. Forte de ses expériences dans des bibliothèques publiques et universitaires, Jacquelyn Sundberg met à profit les acquis de ses maîtrises en littérature anglaise et en sciences de l’information dans le but de rendre les collections accessibles à un plus grand public. Elle gère les collections de livres de cuisine et de livres pour enfants à McGill. Son travail englobe aussi des projets de subventions, des publications, des projets multimédias, des sites Web, des vidéos, des jeux et des patrons à tricoter.
